Hi, I would like to know where at Logan to go to get good pictures of airplanes. Criteria:
-site must be easily accesible walking from the terminals
-site must be before security
-my zoom lens is not very good, so not too far
and I'd like to get lots of pics of Song aircraft before they're gone. Any ideas where to go? Any photo tips?

As this topic is really not specific to DL , I am moving this to Travel & Dining/United States/New England. Please continue to follow it there.
Thanks...

Unfortunately, Massport is pretty obnoxious about photography in general in on-site places. About 2 years ago, I had the priviledge to talk to Phil Orlandella (Massport's spokesman) about taking photos and he told me back then that the Central Garage was alright, but most certainly not Terminal B garage. As for other places, there aren't really pre-security that will get you photos...the windows are either too far back or there aren't any.

I would recommend that you go off the airport to do some spotting. Taking the Blue Line 2 stops north to Orient Heights, walking across Saratoga St. down Barnes Ave. takes you to Constitution Beach...its $1.25 for the train (buses run from all terminals), about a 3 minute train ride, and then a 2-3 minute walk to the beach. It's great if they are using Runway 22 L/R, and could work for 4 L/R.

The upper deck of the terminal B parking garage is the best place for spotting and photos... unless runway 15R/33L is getting the main action.

I got some pics from the top level of the parking garage. I also snapped a photo of the sign that says in a very wordy way that I should not be there. Damn Boston pigs ... I hate that place

For SONG, I would suggest the new walkway that runs between central parking and Terminal A. Just after the last left turn that runs down to the terminal, the walkway continues for about 25 feet and ends in a wall of glass where you have a very good view that includes some of the delta planes at and near the gates.

thanks everyone! do you think friday late afternoon or sat morning is a good time to go spotting? what's the "best" time- i.e., busiest? When do the international widebodies come & go? i know some are there early in the morning. :)

Lots of transatlantic flights leaving in the evening hours.

Try almost anywhere in East Boston or Winthrop, especially along the water.

The OP's thread title made me wonder if there were a menstrual spotting crisis in Boston. :p

This is the wrong season, but the absolute best is to get a boat (rentals are available) and go into the harbor. Arriving planes come in so low you almost think they'll hit your mast. You can practically check the tread wear on the tires.

Many BOS approaches are over water until almost the end, but the two most frequent directions pass right over publicly accessable spots in the last mile. When the wind is right, N - NE, the park at Castle Island in S. Boston is a great place for spotting. Its right across the channel, less than 1/2 mile from the runway end. There are nice lawns to lay out on, a snack bar, fishing, and flight after flight coming in a few hundred feet up. If the wind is coming up from the south, Winthrop is the spot, but doesn't have as many park facilities. Neither is accessible without leaving the airport.

When I was a KID you used to be able to get up on the roof of Terminal C and walk around in the open air. It was incredible. There was also a great plane-spotter's observation level in the central control tower structure -- I used to spend hours up there with my little Realistic ATC-band monitor. I presume you can't do that any more either. :(

Unfotunately access to the tower has been cut off for years. I too remember spending a few afternoons on the observation level. You could even get snacks and drinks at a small bar. It was probably the best airport viewing spot I have seen. The bes now is probably the top deck of either central parking or terminal B parking. Just don't look to suspiscious.
