I keep hearing how bad traffic/taxis are and wondered segways rentals are 1) Allowed & 2)Practical.

Can somebody speak from experience?

What do they cost?

Any input is welcomed...

My guess is that it may be illegal to use a Segway on Las Vegas sidewalks. I tried using rollerblades on the sidewalk along the Strip several years ago, and was told that was illegal.

Not sure if possible, but reasonably sure Segways would be impractical on the Strip. Here's why:

--Sidewalks are generally crowded. Segways take up about as much space as 2-3 people. You'd have a dickens of a time maneuvering.

--Many intersections are closed to surface-level pedestrian crossing. You must take an escalator (impossible for a Segway) on an elevator (considerable delay) and then skyways to move across major cross streets.

Theoretically this would be a great idea. The rental system would be arranged such that you rent a Segway at Casino A and drop it off at Casino B and you get to do this all day and night for a fixed period of time. Obstacles to this seemingly sane idea include 1) the taxi lobby; 2) Segways are still prohibitively expensive; and 3) the ******* tourists can't seem not to stand still blocking the middle of streets, sidewalks, and moving walkways.

Denver Brian hit the nail on the head with why it wouldn't work - the sidewalks are too crowded and you can't get up and down the bridge crossings.

The strip is crazy for traffic, too, and thus would be impossible to drive on the road without risking life and limb.

Too bad, though, because the distances are big enough to warrant it.

If segways are not possible in Las Vegas, where is the best place to rent one, and more importantly to take a few safe lesons to get to know how to use them properly?

I know there are Segway based city tours in San Francisco. They probably have them in other cities as well.

Aside from the impracticalities in Las Vegas in particular, I think most Segway companies are afraid that you'll steal them. Most of the Segway "rentals" I've seen are in tours. Edited: As for day-to-day rentals, they cost hundreds...you might as well take a cab to all your lcoations.

Some places have tours of their areas on segways too.

Segway dealers around the world. (http://www.segway.com/shop/international.html)

Just returned yesterday from a few days in Las Vegas. We saw only few Segways on the strip and they were traversing the sidewalks just like the pedestrians. Of course the drivers wore helmets. The few we saw seemed to have practiced previously as they negotiated the sidewalks well.

Well, if you just want to rent a segway and play around on one, there are a number of companies in Las Vegas that can accommodate you:

A segway tour of Red Rock Canyon would be pretty cool.

If you're staying up at Lake Las Vegas, they reportedly (granted based on something I saw on the Travel Channel, and not my recent stay there) have Segways for rent there - part of a tour, and then you get to play on your own.

There are a lot of negatives --
"branding" yourself in a less than desirable way
too much foot traffic to negotiate on a segway
$$$

I took a Segway tour of Austin, Texas last October...great experience, really enjoyed it...
