Chantilly (AP) - A new runway at Dulles Airport is closer to being paid for.
Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta has signed a letter of intent pledging $200 million dollars over eleven years to pay for the fourth runway.
Dulles set a record last year when it handled 27 million passengers. Mineta says the new runway will allow the airport handle up to 50-percent more traffic when it's completed in 2008.
The runway is supposed to help the airport's efficiency in bad weather, and Mineta says it will help reduce delays at airports across the country.
Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority president James Bennett calls the funding a "very important component" to helping pay for the billions of dollars in work that's being done at the airport.
