I have a friend flying on a dreaded 757 in paid coach(discount). I want to use 20,000 miles to upgrade him and called to do this. There are no upgradeable seats, which I expected, and only 2 left to sell. So, right off the bat I know it's not looking good. But the agent wouldn't even waitlist him. Is that normal? I thought at the minimum he could be waitlisted. Since I'll be with him, can we still request the upgrade at the airport on day of departure? I fully understand that there will probably be preferreds ahead of him, but I just want to understand the process for waitlisting an upgrade using miles.

But can you use miles to upgrade someone else?

I have used my miles to upgrade family members and have never had a problem.

Yes, I've done it many times. Can't answer the part about the waitlist though.
