We're visiting San Francisco in August and I've been wondering about the journey from SFO to our hotel when we arrive. We're staying somewhere around Union Square/Financial District. How much would a taxi cost for this journey?

35usd +/- 5usd, 20-30min, traffic dependent
vs BART (5usd train from SFO, 30min) + cab (~5usd from Montgomery, 5min) or walk if close
vs SuperShuttle (blue van from SFO) 15-20usd, 30-60min (variable on passenger load).

What hotel are you staying at? Have you called to see if they can arrange transportation for you? You can take a shuttle, but note that supershuttle seems to be the most expensive. Try to look for shuttle coupons on the internet for SFO (this is what I always do) and it can be as cheap as $12-13 per person.

I'd take BART from SFO to downtown. Roundtrip is about $10 per person.

For more info., go to http://www.flysfo.com. Go to "Ground transport" section.

Take BART. It will be $5.15 each way and will get you to/near your hotel quicker than a taxi. For Union Square/Financial, you'll want to get
off @ Powell St. or Montgomery St. station.

From Int'l arrivals, go upstairs to the main Int'l check-in area and follow the
signs to BART.

For domestic arrivals, take the escalator/elevator to the upper level(above domestic check-in) and catch the Blue Line AirTrain headed towards Rental Cars.

Get off @ the stop for Parking G/BART and follow the signs. Get on the Dublin/Pleasanton train.
It will take about 35 mins. to get to downtown SF.

Taxis have actually gotten more expensive over the past couple years.
When I've had to take one, it's easily been $40 from my South of Market apartment to SFO as recent as this past summer and I'm a LOT closer to 101 than the Mark Hopkins is.

The Galleria Park, which I think is at Sutter and Kearney. Is this walking distance from the BART station at Montgomery?

Thanks for all the advice.

yes. one or two blocks, depending how you count. map (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&saddr=598+Market+Street,+San+Francisco,+CA+94104+( Montgomery+Street+Station)+%4037.789333,-122.401527&daddr=Sutter+St+%26+Kearny+St,+San+Francisco,+CA+9 4108&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=73.470867,102.128906).
would definitely use BART. i do that exact route often. you'll get spun around when you exit to the street at Montgomery. just ask someone to point you the right way.

I guess while we have some very knowledgeable people on this forum I would like to ask what the distance is from Union Station ( hotel not chosen yet) to Fishermans Wharf.

Is it walkable ?

Thanks in advance for the advice

I personally think just about everything that the typical tourist wants to see in San Francisco is within walking distance. We have a very walkable city.

Assuming you mean Union Square (not Station), you could definitely walk it if you have time and want to enjoy a nice day. You could also take the F Line trolly along Market Street which will take you on a very scenic route all along the Embarcadero for $1.50 round trip. Walking is about 30 to 45 minutes from Union Square to Fisherman's Wharf, trolley is probably 10 to 15.

Good luck, and enjoy your visit!

frank, distance is 2-3mi, depending if you go as the crow flies or the "flatter" route suggested by tim. as for walking, bear in mind there are hills in this city. from union sq, most tourists would take the cable car (http://www.sfcablecar.com/routes.html)

I've walked it (straight up on Powell from the Westin St. Francis) in 29 minutes on a nice day, including those up hill treks. It was a nice way to kill some time...
