Well Mufi might still issue a veto on the bill. Still, a 7-10 p.m. ban isn't the end of the world. There's still a good chunk of time before and after with reasonably large crowds passing up and down Kalakaua.

My prayers have been answered.... Actually, street performers never bothered me until I started staying at the Hyatt.

If I hear "The Sounds of Silence" played one more time by those Peruvian musicians I will shoot myself.

That's too bad. I'm gonna miss that guy painted silver standing there doing nothing.

I remember a number of years ago wen they finally clamped down on the hookers. That really was a nice turn of events.

I kinda miss seeing the hookers, it just added to the melange that is Waikiki... ;) They're not gone - they've just moved to Kuhio.

That guy in silver was a strange sight. Who were some of the other performers. I can't remember, but I do remember that there were several up and down Kalakaua. I have never seen any hookers when I have been there. We usually just stay in the hotel at night because I am afraid of my own shadow.

You are as safe in the early evening on Kalakaua as in your hotel, so you should enjoy a stroll each evening. The reason you can't remember the "performers" is probably that they were not worth remembering. They did give a little local color and gather a crowd. For better entertainment , catch the small shows in front of the Royal Hawaiian. During the day between 1:00 & 3:00, the locals gather at the beach pavilion in the 2400 block of Kalakaua for a jam session of Hawaiian and contemporary music. On most Sat. evenings, Joe plays the violin at the same location. Joe is a real virtuoso who plays a wide range of tunes using his own amplifier. If you like to do Greek or Russian dancing, sing Italian songs, etc he will also provide the music for that. Don't insult him with money, he plays for the enjoyment. JOE IS A MUST! If you play chess, slip up to the neighboring pavilion! Kalakaua is a fun street! Ken

The hookers are most definitely back - esp. on Sat nights on that street off of Kalakaua between the Hyatt & that Sheraton.

When did they get rid of the ricksha guys along Kalakaua?
I havent been to Waikiki in 20 years, but I remember there were dozens of them back then. It was widely known that if you wanted to buy some pakololo, they were the guys to talk to!
:p
