Beginning today, Cleveland will start issuing tickets to drivers caught on camera who illegally run red lights or speed. Violators will be fined $100 to $200. The cameras appear at or near the following intersections: Shaker Boulevard at Shaker Square; Chester Avenue and East 71st Street; Prospect Avenue and East 40th Street; West Boulevard and North Marginal Road. Six additional mobile cameras, manned by police, roam the city to catch speeders. Thirty more cameras are scheduled for installation in the next few months. Tickets should arrive in violators' mailboxes about one week from the day of the infraction.

As someone who has been known to have a lead foot and maybe extend a yellow light from time-to-time, I don't like anything that raises my chances of getting more tickets. But the bottom line is that these cameras will generate badly needed revenue for the city. And as long as speed traps and other traffic citations are used as a major source of revenue, I actually prefer that they are these cameras. I certainly don't enjoy the interaction with the cop that is writing my ticket. This way, maybe they can save money by hiring fewer cops, or reassign the cops they have to more important tasks.

What would really be nice would be if they would just enforce the "No Parking/No Stopping" rules on major commuter thoroughfares. Idiots plug up traffic during rush hours. Enforcement of that would help, but then that would ticket/pry money out of city residents instead of suburbanites.
