if you were to visit only one theme park in hk, which one would that be?

Can't comment on Ocean Park but can fully recommend Disneyland. I went on my honeymoon - a little bit nervously because it is quite a small Disney. There was a Typhoon warning on the day I went and all the outdoor rides were closed, but we still managed to have a really enjoyable full day.
Food and merchandise by Paris and Florida standards were really cheap, and we got our tickets fully refunded because of the weather problems.
One thing though - there are no thrill rides the only roller coaster is very lame.

Ocean Park gets my vote. Avoid the rides, but go to see the Pandas, the Butterfly house, the ornamental Goldfish and of course the truly massive aquarium tanks and the shows... much better value and more unique than disney-lite.

I visited Ocean Park in March this year and have to say I enjoyed the place. Thought the dolphin/sea lion show was fun, the massive aquarium was fascinating but if you are into thrills and rides, then there's quite a few to chose from.
Have to say I felt my life pass before me on just the small rollercoaster and there is a much bigger one on the edge of a cliff.
Only downside is that it shuts (IIRC) around 5pm or perhaps 5.30pm.

I would definitely say Ocean Park.
When I went there, they were about to open Disneyland. A lot of people I know joked that Disneyland is just the "new" Ocean Park. It's a pretty decent place and fun to go to. The food is expensive though and not really good. The day I went there were a lot of Mainland Chinese people visiting which isn't bad if I didn't see at least 10 of them spit on the ground, let 8 people budge in line for the cable ride, yell extremely loudly and let their kids pee in the bushes. Not to say that this didn't happen according to news reports of the opening of Disneyland either... that was just my particular experience that day.
This last time I went they had fijian or hawaiian celebration which was awesome! Hula girls, guys having fire on their tongues, drummers, etc. The girls had been bitten pretty bad by the summer mosquitoes in HK as some of their legs/back were covered w/ mosquito bites.
I'd probably save Disneyland for a later trip as they are still working out some kinds and I hear there's more development in store?
ANyways, even the train to Sunny Bay is a pretty cool build-up experience w/ Mickey Mouse handles, Disney figures encased in fancy cases throughout the car, the Mickey Mouse shaped windows and the plush seats are all pretty awesome!

Disney is taking HK$50 off for people with a HK ID card, until early December.

I have yet to go to the new Disney, but my sister has, with my niece. Her experience is that she'll never go again -- far too many people, and the place hasn't worked out all its kinks. Maybe give it a few years, but as of right now, Ocean Park is probably more fun and more interesting/diverse.

Far too many people? I think they don't have enough visitors. No line anywhere. Problem is the park is small, and with no lines, one can "finish" the park in half a day.

For purely selfish reasons, I hope that's the case when I visit just before New Year's. ;)

I would vote for Ocean Park.
Opening hours are from 9am to 6.30pm

My preference would definately stick to Ocean Park. Lots of live zoo/marine creatures to enjoy - something that Disney theme parks lack. Besides those mice, duck, dog cartoon creatures of are begining to feel dull after seeing them over and over again. Haven't been to the HK Disneyland and definately not interested in going.

neither...
disneyland is definitely a no-no if you have access to ca's disneyland or disneyworld in orlando.
my guess: it's primarily for the mainland chinese who can't go elsewhere except HK.

Disneyland is pretty small.
I went on Christmas day - the 2nd day since opening when they had to close the park due to maximum capacity being reached.
I still managed to finish the place in around 4 hours. Longest queue was about 15 mins. The "Fast Pass" is pretty good when there are crowds.
Rides are fairly tame. Wildest one is Space Mountain - and that's more likely to shake you up than scare you too much...

Even though Disneyland is small, it still took me a whole day to see everything - go for the shows, not the rides. I went on a weekday and it was very busy.
Ocean Park has a much nicer geographical setting, built on hillsides and facing the ocean. If you're into animals and nature, then Ocean Park should be high on your list.

Haven't been to the Disneyland yet, but an additional note about Ocean Park:
There's an amazing cable car ride at Ocean Park that connects two walkable parts of the park. The view's pretty, and that alone with the impressive shark exhibit, is enough for an enjoyable day in the park.
