Going to KUL June 5-7, for a second vist. I want to find the best place for rendang.
I really love the stuff. I don't mind if it is a local place/food court or high end restaurant! The name and location would be great.
Also, the best place for satay/peanut sauce would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Rendang is a spicy, Malay dish. Very tasty with yellow rice. (kunyit). Try any of those hawker places. The same goes with satay. I tried Satay Ria?, a satay chain and they were pretty good.
Yummy... talking about all this food is making me hungry. Too bad I'm so far away from Malaysia... :(

I love beef rendang and roti cannai; unfortunately, it's not easy to find great Malaysian in most corners of the Americas or Europe.

It is generally believed that the best Satays are found in "Kajang" a small town south of KL. Personally I found most satay stalls in KL to be as good as those in Kajang, the difference being that the peanut sauce in Kajang is of a lighter colour and chilli paste is added to the sauce seperately to make it spicier. I cant think of any particular satay stall in KL that is especially spectacular, but at most places you are assured of quality equivalent to or exceeding those served on MH's flights that many Flyertalkers rave about ;)
It is often difficult to find a genuine Malay restaurant in KL. If you are staying at the Sheraton Imperial, you can actually walk to "Kampung Baru" which is a Malay village in the middle of the city. There are plenty of roadside stalls in the evening with a genuine Malay "kampung" environment. Unlike Chinatown, you wont find any tourist there.
If you are staying at the MO, there is a foodcourt at the shopping mall next door (Suria KLCC) with a very popular stall serving Malay food from the state of Kelantan. There is also a Kelantanese restaurant in the same shopping mall.
My favourite restaurant for Malay food in a comfortable environment is at the "Paya Serai", located within the Petaling Jaya Hilton; a very extensive buffet spread each evening with a variety of Malay dishes including rendangs. However, you may find it a little inconvenient to dine there if you are staying in the city centre.

From Savuer Magazine Jan/Feb 2005:
Malaysia is the birthplace of several regional varieties of Laksa, a vibrant SE Asian noodle soup. Our favorite? The spice-rich version from Kuala Lumpur known as curry laksa or curry mee. The city's best is at Restoran Mee Kai Kee, a street stall that slings hundreds of bowls nightly of chef-owner Tony Wai's laksa. With its silken chicken and coconut milk curry, it's pure noodle nirvana.

I would say that any popular night hawker ("mamak") stall/restaurant in the KL area would have good rendang and/or satay. Kajang satay is legendary (much bigger chunks of meat than in KL) but getting to Kajang is a pain especially on a short stay. For the experience, I would probably cab it to Bangsar (very close to Sentral/LeM) and go to either Devi's Corner or Lotus or even the open-air mamak stalls next to Jolly Green Giant. Ask for roti canai with rendang chicken/beef/mutton-lamb, get some satay and you're all set! There are other further out places but the distance makes it less convenient. Plus, after eating in Bangsar you can go bar-hopping or clubbing up the street :)
I wish I knew some high-end places that serve good rendang/satay but I don't. The Suria KLCC food court seems to be the most civilized place I can think of for those items. They just seem more like street food to me.
As for the Americas, it's easy to get good rendang and roti canai in DC :)

Before or after it caught fire? ;)
[No, the one on 19th & M was not a result of my overeating at the one's owned by Stan Lee of the parent Penangs in New York. :D ]

LOL! I like the 19th/M one only because they deliver to my house. Otherwise, I only go to the Bethesda one which has a much larger and more delicious menu. 19th/M seems to be watered down for clueless folks :D (I mean, how can they not have Hainanese Chicken Rice on the menu?? That's like my lunch staple!)
Still, I have to give the 19th/M one credit for making roti canai a hip bar food (with Cosmos in hand, who woulda thought?). The rendang beef is pretty good too (right tenderness but still too soggy, IMO).
Nyonya (aka "The Original" or "No Credit Cards!") in NYC, grandma to all the Penangs, is still my fave ^ I have no idea why Nyonya hasn't spread or why Penang hasn't ventured to the left coast yet.

Yes. But the real question is if they will deliver a coconut dream or a coconut scream. :D

To further the explanation of Rendang - saw it made on a cooking show and I think properly made it takes HOURS of slow cooking. It is WONDERFUL (in my experience), spicy, sweet, complex thick sauce coating succulently tender meat :D
Sweet Willie - where is Restoran Mee Kai Kee? Would like to try it :)

I believe it's near Maharajalela Monorail station, opposite the old Stadiums.
