Seriously, if they want to abandon the US Airways name, they should consider buying the Pan Am name. The drawback to that would be that Al Qaeda would want to destroy the airline.
Other names to consider might include names from the US Airways' past, such as PSA, Piedmont, and Empire. National might not be such a bad name.
American would block the use of TWA.

They don't want to. Management was very clear in today's conference call that they believe the US Airways name has value and that they're going to use it for what they repeatedly referred to as "the new airline."

The combined new airline operates in a lot of international markets; the US Airways name is one that makes it clear that the airline is a US flag carrier. Keeping it is a good move. Whatever baggage the name has will be lost in PHL anyhow!

Yeah, airlines that aren't going bankrupt every 5 minutes are for losers. Not to mention that crappy ol' WN is sending this joke of an airline into a death spiral by moving into its hubs.
But you seem like an optimist, buy some US-AWA stock with your life savings. I'm sure that'll work out well for you.

I wonder if you did a search of this website, to see how many times people have predicted the demise of both America West and US Airways? Many people thought HP would fold in the months after 9/11, and more thought US would fail over the last year. But they're both still here and doing what they can to become a formidable competitor to WN, by providing service to about 4x the number of destinations in many more countries and across the Star Alliance.

To me, the funniest thing about this post is that neither "US Air" nor "AWA" is the actual name of the airline. They're US Airways and America West.

Well, smart guy, people occasionally use abbreviations on this board rather than typing out the full name of every airline. Look around, you might notice this phenomenon if you're observant.

If one were to use quotation marks, I think it might be best to use the actual names though. And the title does seem to insinuate that the names are "US Air" and "AWA"
I'm just being picky though ;)

Anyone know if they are going to be in the Star Alliance - I would love the ORD - PHX/ORD - LAS option on America West...

I think that you are forgetting one very important thing. ATSB!!!! America West has had on and off quarters only after receiving a 400 million dollar loan from the government. And by no means is US even close to being out of the woods. If they recieve any more money from the ATSB, it should be a crime. If there was no merger, they would still be both in very dire condition.

Oooo! If they do change the name (not bloody likely) I'm VERY much in favor of the Pan Am option. That would just be awesome. Especially if they kept their current color scheme.

They can't bring back PanAm. Someone is already flying and using that name and they are based out of NH.

Those are loan guarantees. The ATSB doesn't put up the money, they promise to repay the loan if the carrier defaults.
