I know no one has a definite answer right now to this question, but I'll ask it. Will US Airways make non-stop service from cities in the East/Midwest to Phoenix that aren't served by America West currently (i.e. Dayton, Cincinnati)? They say the main hubs will be CLT, PHL, and PHX.

From the conference call, it did not seem as if they intended to add flights like this, at least from the start. More reductions than additions seemed to be planned.

If you look at the comparison chart about the 2 companies, it seems they overlap on 38 routes. Maybe these are these routes that will be trimmed while adding elsewhere they don't already fly?
? who knows ?

America West has served cities such as Omaha to Phoenix and Las Vegas for a long, long time. They already fly to Columbus. Perhaps they will expand to Dayton and Cincinnati.

I'm not sure where you heard that, but it's not correct. The only routes they overlap on I can think of would be PHX to the hubs and LAS to the hubs/mini-hubs, and they don't even serve Charlotte ... maybe there's a few others I'm missing, but not many ... I think the overlap is more like less than 10 ...

Dayton?!? Remember that Columbus was an America West hub until recently, which explains why they serve it and not other cities ... and Columbus is the largest City in Ohio anyway, Dayton doesn't quite compare.

Dayton is an old US Air hub from when they acquired Piedmont

And that would somehow justify it getting non-stops to PHX or LAS?

One of the cards to watch will be Air Wisconsin. I am guessing that they will use their planes to fill in the middle of the country. When they are no longer a United Express carrier, they have a number of planes they need to fly somewhere.

Try four non-stop routes:
PHX-PHL
PHX-PIT
LAS-PHL
LAS-PIT

It's found on the comparison chart that's posted on the website:

Wouldn't "markets" be different than "routes"?
Doesn't that mean that there are 38 cities served by both airlines?

Maybe?! Didn't think of it that way. I was thinking of routes.

Dayton has the ability to draw from the Cincinnati area as well. If the fares are better than what DL is offering at its hub, DAY could be viable by drawing on the Cincinnati market and especially from the northern suburbs, which are growing fairly rapidly. DAY is a nice little airport that has plenty of room to absorb expansion because it has a lot of unused former PI/US gates still sitting there.

At the outset, you're probably right. However, there are a lot of HP cities in the middle of the country that would be candidates for expanded CLT service down the road. OKC, ICT, SAT, ABQ come to mind as examples. Likewise, you could see some expansion of PHX service out of some of the east coast cities that US serves but HP does not.
One thing this merger does that has not been mentioned is to strengthen US' hand at the congested east coast airports, especially DCA with the nonstops to PHX and LAS. US tried and failed to get a range exemption out of DCA and now it looks like they got two that will provide good connections to the west coast that were lacking before.
My big question is what this will do to the LAX club closure. Since both are in T1, it would seem to make sense to rescind that decision to close the Club down once the merger is done.

You're right DAY has many gates sitting there for someone to use them. ;) The only thing is DAY has actually seen a drop in passengers from last year to this year with DL's simplifares. People in CVG are using DAY a little less since DL lowered their fares from CVG. DAY is still cheaper, but not by as much.
