Possibly traveling to BOM in July from either PHL or one of the NYC airports...
Air India has some business class seats for $3k vs $8k+ on the other airlines. Economy on the other airlines is going to run probably 1500.
I've read of many Air India horror stories... but if I'm going to be on a plane for nearly a day or more... the idea of possibly having larger seats or at least being able to recline more and have more leg room is obviously really appealing.
Anyone have any experiences to relate or recommendations...

For NYC to BOM, if you can manage to pull together 25,000 British Airways miles, then get a WT+ fare on British Airways and you upgrade roundtrip to business (flat-bed in Club) using miles. [But make sure that upgrade space is available since BA is known to be miser on occassions.] WT+ fares for NYC-DEL/BOM are quite reasonable.

Business class on Air India is the way to go, if finances allow.

Air India flights credit only to a handful of programs, like its own, Air France and/or Lufthansa's.

LH M&M now gives status and bonus miles on all AI flights, so AI in C should be a good option. The product is pretty decent and definitely better than BA or LH Y
If you have more time, I would suggest Malaysia Airlines as an alternative --- they fly from EWR 3x a week. Obviously a much longer journey but having flown MH, I would def recommend it if the schedule fits.
I believe there is a travel agency on the West Coast that sells MH biz class to India for $2799 -- I don't have it but a search of FT should pull it up.

No status miles. Only award miles.
AI's business and first class are a class act. Yes they dont have the full sleeper seats in business but they have better seats than delta BE for example.
And BA flies really crappy birds from LHR to BOM. So if u r in Y, its a PITA.
I would go with AI business any day. The food is awesome....lobster into and outa india !!
