I was thinking of spending the weekend in GUA for the US Memorial Day holiday. How is the nightlife on a weekend there?

So did you go? It appears that GUA is a destination where it's actually possible to use Onepass miles. I was thinking of a long weekend trip in September. How was the nightlife? Any hotel suggestions? Does anyone know about the Biltmore Expresss or Bresciani hotels? Does anyone visit this forum? Thanks

The lake....the lake! What about living by the lake for a few weeks?
No, I ended up having to work that weekend. I'd like to go someday.
Wouldn't recommend Guate. Take the shuttle or cab to Antigua (30-45 mins). Nice town, nice hotels, good nightlife and smaller odds that you get shot.
Let me know if you need add. Info.

Bumping this thread up!
I am considering cashing in a few DL or UA miles this Winter after reading so many positive things about Antigua (Guatemala). Questions:
Which taxi/shuttle company recommended to get there from GUA?
Several departures, including prefered UA to LAX depart at 0700. Must one overnight in GUA on the return from Antigua, or would a taxi/shuttle pick you up 0430 or 0500 to get you to the airport on time?
I have been enjoying reading the websites of the properties mentioned in www.aroundantigua.com but if anyone has other recommendations, particularly a special one-day excursion, please share. I am looking at making this a 4-day weekend if possible.
Thanks in advance!

I am also looking Antigua for a 4-5 day weekend this winter. Good prices on AA flights to GUA. Any suggestions?
It is a great place for inexpensive dining and shopping is almost as fun as Bali if you like interesting textiles and handwork. My rule of thumb as a single female traveler was if it is nightime and there are women and children on the street it is probably safe enough for me. If I didn't see anyone else I made haste to leave. Great food and restaurants. There is a neat hotel in a converted convent. Does that make sense? I would love to go back. Think about doing a "language school" trip with a home stay. It is cheap and you can learn or improve your Spanish. Buen Viaje.
P.S. You can take some great side trips over to Lake Panajachel, Chichicastango, or even up to the ruins of Tikal. There are local travel agencies that can arrange such day trips.

I was in Antigua last weekend, on my way home from Belize. I strongly recommend it.
We just hired a taxi from our guest house. It was about $20 to get there, and $20 to get back. The taxis all drop you in the main square. For your return, I would recommend you have the name and address of your hotel clearly printed on a piece of paper, as well as marked on a map. Our taxi driver back was a great guy, but didn't know exactly were the hotel was. By showing the paper to helpful others he was able easily find it easily.
When in Antigua, I would STRONGLY recommend Elizabeth Bell's cultural walking tour. It's $18 USD and worth every penny:

This would certainly work.
We had the 0700 flight out, so we stayed at the guest house below. Definitely not the Hilton, but fine for one night and literally 2 minutes from the airport:
