I'm going to SF next Monday to meet a friend who will fly in from Thailand. She told me she will get in at 11am, thus asked me to meet her in hotel around 11.00am then we can go lunch. After ticket was bought, my friend plan is changed and now I have to lunch alone until 1.00pm.

Well, since my mind is already set on having Dim Sum. Do you have any suggestions for good Dimsum area in Downtown SF? I am coming in via Bart from OAK and have to meet my friend in Union Sq area, thus looking for restaurants around market street / downtown / or china town.

I did try 'Yang Sing' last time I went there. I agree with other people that the place is good but very pricey (paid $110 for 3 ppl lunch). Now, I have Harbor Village at Embarcadero Center on my plan - but want to see if you have other "better" idea. Cost is not a big factor, but preferably within $30.

PS. Any FT in SF wants to join on lunch? Better for me than eating alone.

Darnit I was going to reccomend Yank Sing. there is a location just a few blocks from the Bart station. I do agree that it is a bit pricey, however it is very good.

Don't think you can go wrong anywhere in Chinatown. Just look for a place with allot of Chinese people (eating there). ;)

The best in SF, the best in North America, the best outside of southern China is Yet Wah on Clanton Street. It's famous even in Hong Kong.

I used to eat at Yet Wah years ago, but haven't been there in a long time.

By the way, there is no "Clanton" Street. You must be referring to the Yet Wah on Clement St. Here are Yet Wah's locations (NONE of them are in or near downtown SF, however):

Another possibility (besides Yank Sing, which is indeed very good) near downtown would be Harbor Village Restaurant in Embarcadero Center. This is a very well-respected and also somewhat pricey place. I ate there years ago but haven't been recently, so I can't vouch for the food personally:

I agree that Harbor Village is a good choice if not a bit on the expensive side. When I go, I usually get the deep fried shrimp dumplings (the ones with a side of broth). They're incredible.

I ended up going to 'harbor village' and tried their stuff out. What I think is they have a very good dim-sum and they are pricey as I guessed. Sad that I read the post a little too late so I didn't try deep fried shrimp dumplings.

Comparing to Yank-Sing, they both are on the same price level. As for taste, I think Yank-Sing is a small-notch better - but either places would make a good lunch.

Next time I go to SF, will try Yet-Wah. Thanks all for the information.

If you want other suggestions, it might also be useful to check out Chowhound. Those people know their stuff! And on the SF board, dim sum comes up often.

Sorry and thanks for the correction. In the city of SF, everything is near. This is coming from someone in LA mind you. ;)
