There are other reports of looting in the capitol associated with a political rally.

Apparently power was lost in the terminal as well as phone lines. US Airways operations could not get in touch with their station there. A satellite phone is being sent on the next flight to operate into Belize in the event this kind of thing happens again.

I'm surprised that US (and through it, its insurance company) would send a plane to an airport without power or a phone connection. Maybe I am too risk averse...

I agree - that's absolutely nuts. Pilots going to try to land to if the tower is incomunicado?

Phone service there is down because of labor unrest.
I live in St. Croix and our phone service is by the same company that is trying to take over the phone system in Belize. Jefferey Prosser and Innovative Communications Company (ICC) are a bunch of crooks. It is more expensive to call St. Croix, which is a US territory from the mainland then it is to call many other foreign countries. VOIP is not available because Jeffery has bought off enough regulators to prevent it. To add insult to injury, Prosser, who flies around in his own 727, continues to get EDC benefits for his company getting them out of 90% of their taxes. This is amazing for a company that runs a regulated monopoly and does not have to compete. I am rarely a fan of unions, but in this case I hope the workers fight this guy tooth and nail.
I use "Choice" for my internet and a cell phone to avoid this guys racket down in the islands. One day the FCC will wake up to this guy and end his racket.

Communications have been resumed, and only then is a flight going. The satellite phone is in case this kind of thing happens again.
