These would, of course, be the very same industry experts who have so successfully predicted US' imminent demise how many times now?
Pay attention to deelmakur. The fun has only just begun.
It would be a long adjustment/phase in, that's for sure. Union integration and aircraft rationalization (their Airbuses use different engines than US) will be among the larger problems.

Apparently Wall Street isn't so optimistic, either. AWA is down 10% since the WSJ article.
Agree, merger will be hard but is possible.

If you look back at Us airway's history this is a company that had completed the largest merger in airline history at one time. I think if the Us-HP merger goes through it will be more along the lines eventually of traditional mergers. If there is a downturn in the industry we might see something like what happened to TWA and AA though both companies will not survive that. However if it works, in 10+ years we will have a company like Delta in the early 90s with a bigger route structure like after the Western airlines merger. I wonder though how much this merger will change the hub and spoke system since that may be what is broken with the current operating environment other than fuel costs of course.

Except that in the early 90s DL had a heckuva lot more international service than any HP/US combination would possibly have, unless they go out and pick up more 767s or A330s.

No, No: no more 767s! I'll wield torches and paint placards. I swear I will.

I knew after the lipstick the torches couldn't be far behind. :)
