Yum - white castles.
I never had the opportunity to have one until I moved to NJ. The white castle in Brooklyn was not in the best of neighborhoods.
You only had 4? That's barely a snack. I'm good for at least 6 or 7 of them ^^

Yeah, I've got to say the "fresh" white castle's are much better than the frozen ones.
I am a big slider/belly bomber fan.
Have any of you been in the southeast where they have Krystal? How do you think they compare to the original (for me at least, don't know if WC was first)?

The Krystal's to me are just a notch below the White Castle's. I like the White Castle's buns better. As for the frozen variety - White Castle wins out big time - Krystal's are barely edible.

White Castle is far superior to Krystal.
In fact, 2 years ago in an effort to bring some Whitey's to Atlanta with me, I almost bought a 'Crave Case' (24 pack I do believe) with me as my carry on a CVG - ATL flight.

Absolutely nothing beats the taste and consistency of a murderburger.
I once figured out why there were 5 little holes in each burger: that is where the toenails/claws of the cows are when they slice the foot into the thin burger slices

In college, I was one of relatively few people who had a car. One night we packed 8 people into my Maverick for a Castle run.
One spring break, I was in Daytona with some of those friends. We were fairly hammered when we wandered into a Krystal. We ordered a bunch of burgers and asked the cashier if Krystal was affiliated with White Castle, since the burgers were about the same size. A look of disdain stole over his face as he replied, "No, they have holes in their burgers!" We howled with laughter. :D

I moved to Seattle two years ago from the midwest...how I wish I could get rid of nonsense like Jack in the Box for a White Castle! I always grab a slider (a sack full that is) every time I'm in Chicago or Columbus.
Just the plain...never muddy things up with the cheese, jalapenos, etc.
And Harold and Kumar is a highly underrated movie!

White Castles seem to be a love/hate thing...
I love 'em! We used to live in Oregon for a while and on our trips back to the lower midwest to visit family, I always insisted on a stop at a White Castle where I would buy 200 or so (they didn't blink an eye when they got that kind of order!), pop the cases inside a garbage bag and into a shopping bag, and we'd take them on the plane. The aroma filled the plane, some folks recognized the smell and we'd usually end up opening them up and sharing them. Although, I'm sure there were some very polite pax that didn't appreciate the smell and were just too kind to mention it.
Krystal vs White Castle?
I went to college in Nashville, where Kyrstal is the only option.
Just the thought of a Krystal brings a hangover on ;)

True, but an order of Jack's egg rolls with a shake helps out with those kinda cravings.

Why are there no White Castle in Canada? At least, not in BC,

My daughter lived in St. Louis for a few years. She filled me in on all the local specialties. So when I visited her, I had to have them all -- Concretes at Ted Drewes, White Castle, Toasted Ravioli, though I drew the line at St. Paul sandwiches. All I can say is that there is something very wierd about those St. Louians. White Castle was without a doubt the strangest and worst hamburger I have ever had, anywhere. Remarkable how the bun adheres to the "meat." Toasted ravioli is just strange, not horrible. But Concrete?? Love it!

I've never tried a White Castle burger but I've been hearing about them for years. I got this off www.recipelink.com but I have no way to know how closely it compares to the real thing. Anyway, for those of you who don't live near enough to buy the real thing but are willing to try out this recipe - good luck!
White Castle Burgers
1 lb ground round
2/3 c canned beef broth
1 jar beef baby food
hot dog buns cut in thirds
1/4 c minced onion
1/4 c hot water
Burger: Mix Ground round, beef broth, baby food. Put in fridge 2 hours. Make small patties, poke holes in meat as cooking.
Topping: Mix onion and hot water till soften.
When burgers done, top with hydrated onion, and put on buns. Mustard and dill pickle make it completely authentic.

I went to school in STL and have to agree with everything you've said. Ted Drewes is fantastic and White Castle is absolutely disgusting. I forgot how bad sliders were and went to a WC in Michigan last August with some friends. I felt sick the entire next day (had not even been drinking).

I’m a huge fan of White Castles but unfortunately there are none West of the Rockies. But since I travel extensively throughout the US I’m usually in a White Castle city a few times a year.
And I agree with the above comments about the frozen White Castles being vastly inferior to the fresh variety.
The company I used to work for was one of the two suppliers of burgers to White Castle. I once visited the plant in Eau Claire, WI where they were made and it’s probably something most people would not care to witness....
The ground beef is 50% fat and is formed into a 4-foot long square log and then frozen. The frozen logs are almost pure white due to the gut-wrenching fat content. The holes ( who’s purpose is to allow them to cook faster without flipping ) are punched through the log after it’s frozen. It’s then sliced into burgers which are 20 to the pound or slightly less than an ounce each.
So there you have the rest of the story...;).

That's the lesser-known reason why they're called Sliders. ;) A lot of my friends also complain about gastrointestinal ailments after eating White Castles. They're obviously wusses--or I just have an iron stomach.

Same explanation for the other nickname for White Castle burgers, "Belly Bombers". Combine about 12 Belly Bombers/Sliders with a bunch of beer, then a few cups of coffee the next morning, and no one could be constipated that next day.

The mechanism by which White Castle burgers cook is actually called "steam grilling." The cook ladles a mess of onions in their packing liquid onto the grill, then covers the onions with frozen burgers. I remember ads a few years ago singing the praises of this method, explaining that the burgers never touch the grill surface. The implication is apparently that the burgers do not burn and stay more tender than burgers cooked in a more conventional manner.

It all depends WHEN you eat them. Thinking back, when I ate them after a long night of drinking, there might have been a time or two that there were some gastrointestinal sequelae. When eaten on their own, I think they are just delicious, but greasy, treats...

The Butter Burgers are above average, but the frozen custard is outstanding. You have to have the tast for it - think frozen yougurt, only much richer. For me, it's the best.

Does anybody know if any of the White Castles in the Louisville, KY area are open 24hrs, or even have drive-thrus open very late. I'm meeting my brother at SDF in a few weeks, but my flight doesn't land until 12:30 am. I had White Castles twice last year, but my brother hasn't had them in probably 15 years.
I grew up in KY and IN, and loved White Castles. We moved to the South, where there are only Krystals. Krystals are OK, but are no comparison whatsoever to White Castles. Whenever I'm in the Midwest or Northeast, I try to go to a White Castle. I am kind of glad there are none near me, as I would probably be huge otherwise :).

AFAIK, all White Castle's are open 24/7.
And here's a recipe for White Castle's ( Not for the squeamish or faint-of-heart  ):
Mix all the ingredients in blender (pickles, buns, everything). Form into ball. Chill well. Serve with crackers. They will love this! Enjoy!

Friends of ours in the Miami/Miami Beach area emailed us recently to say that there's only one White Castle still open in the South Florida area where I grew up. Sad to think that all those great tiny burgers and birch beer that we consumed years ago in high school have not perpetuated their continued existance. Guess times, and stomach capabilities change over the years.
Any White Castles left in Connecticut, between Enfield and Mystic/New London?

I had my first "Whitey" about 20 years ago in St. Louis. Actually, it was about 6 Whiteys. They seemed like a novelty and they went down well after a night of partying. The locals all said that you had to eat them fresh and warm, otherwise there could be problems.
Last summer, we visited a White Castle in St. Louis with my family. Nobody's stomach could handle the little square monsters. I guess I chalk it up to the ageing process. What's everyone else's excuse?

Ahhhh, slider memories. I get them when Im stressed and working real late.
When I was in college I had a summer job that had me getting off work at 4 AM or so. Time for dinner so I would stop in a White Castle sometimes for dinner. Just me, some cab drivers, a few pimps and the occassional cop in there at that time of the morning.
In grad school in A2 after cheap pitcher night at Dooleys we would pile into someones car and head for Detroit and sliders. What madness addiction can cause ;)

Are White Castles in that many areas? In my travels I don't remember seeing that many, I know they are in Ohio, New Jersey, and maybe somewhere in the Midwest, but it seems like I have run into more Krystals.
In my youth I had a slight preference for Krystals, they seemed a little greasier, which of course was a good thing! :)
I wonder if Krystal still has those criss-cross fries, those were a bit hit too! I probably haven't eaten at one in 10 years though, oh the good old days!

They're primarily in the Midwest and in the NY/NJ area. And they're only in select cities and not on every corner like Mickey D's. Just 380 White Castles in the US.
There are none West of St. Louis or South of Nashville and all are company owned.
