Need some help here. I am looking into award flights from PHL to DTW and to MSP. It seems like all the nonstops are on either crj or erj? Does US not fly the 737's to the midwest anymore? What are the regional jets like? How will they be for a family of four?

Thanks

Shoot for an E70 if possible. Two by two seating, and pretty comfy from what I've heard (still haven't gotten on one yet).

Of the ERJ or the CRj, always go for the ERJ170. It's not great, but definitely the better of the two.
But, still uncomfortable for hops longer than an hour IMHO.

Find the hardest seat in your house. (in mine it is the solid wood dining chairs). Move the refrig away from the stove about 18 inches. Place chair in open space. Go sit in it. Pull your legs up to your chin. Sit in this postion for two hours. Get up and try to walk after the two hours.

You have just experienced what your flight will be like on a Barbie Jet.

Oh I forgot, have some one bring a very small bag of pretzels about 20 minutes into your experience. Of course you can eat with only one hand. You will need the other to continue holding your knees up to your chin,

I find the E-170 to be quite comfortable, actually. To me it really feels more like a "real" jet. I flew PIT-DFW a few weeks ago. At first I was surprised they had it on a leg that long, but I was actually pretty happy with the experience.

I agree the E-170 is a better coach seat then the 737, 757, 319 or 320. I would go for the E-170 if you go on a ERJ or CRJ get the exit rows for the extra leg room.

Having never flown the E-170 I should have made clear that the comments posted above were concerning the Barbie Jets of the 145 and CRJ species

According to the downloadable timetables, the late night flight (10:40 PM) PHL-DTW is on a 737. MSP is pretty much all RJs.

The PHL-DTW flight in a CRJ is on the outside margin of what I consider bearable. You could try a connect through PIT or DCA -- the DCA connect will take a little longer, but you can probably get mainline or an E170, which is far better. On the MSP flight, take UA through ORD to avoid a three hour CRJ flight, which is just ridiculously long. Looking at the schedule, there are UA connections that will take an hour longer than the N/S CRJ trip, which is worth it in my opinion.

Or, if you're really lucky, you can find an open overhead bin and crawl in. By far the most recline of any of the spots on this cra**y plane.

If you connect through CLT, there are two flights daily to MSP on Airbus A319s.

On a route as long as PHL-MSP, I'd much rather leave a few hours earlier and spend my flight time on a 319 in F or the exit row than get a nonstop on a CRJ.
