Hello,

How long does it take when you cancel an award ticket for fees to be refunded? I got socked with the security fees and then cancelled an award ticket. I did not redeposit the miles yet, just have them sitting in limbo, seeing if USAirways makes it or not. But might as well get the fees back; the reservations agent did cancel the reservation, but did not mention anything about the fees and I did not think to ask back when I cancelled about two weeks ago.

Is it automatic when an award reservation is cancelled to refund the fees? If so, how long does it take? If not, do I call reservations or Dividend Miles customer service back?

Thanks for the feedback

I cancelled a pair of Caribbean award tickets in May, and about 2 weeks later the security fees were refunded. In my experience the mileage redeposits are much quicker. For example, I booked an award ticket Wednesday night, cancelled it Thursday night, and this morning the miles were back in my account.

If you cancel but don't redeposit, you can rebook the same cities for no change fee. You must redeposit & pay that fee to get your taxes back.

What are the magic words I need to say to cancel without redepositing? Do the funds then remain with the inactive record locator? What if I have paper tickets?

You mean an award ticket? You don't have to actively cancel, just don't show up if you don't want to redeposit right then. But if you want your security fees back, AFAIK you must redeposit and pay whatever fee is due for that (varies by status).

It's been a long time since I've had a paper award ticket from US, but I rescheduled by phone and they fixed it at the airport. To redeposit a paper ticket, you have to mail it back.

I did cancel my ticket (guess I thought it was only fair so US could in theory sell the seat) and just told the reservation agent I did not want to redeposit the miles at this time.

Grr, well it sucks that you have to redeposit. But the 'open' award I have is good till August 2005 so if USAirways makes it that long, they'll get $100 from me to redeposit the miles, minus the $10 in fees they owe me :)

Say just that

Do the funds then remain with the inactive record locator?

Yes, the unused miles can be looked up that way or with your DM number

Now how would one get there taxes and fees back if the airline shuts down. I have a ATL-NRT in May on United and wonder if United does not honor ticket, can I at least get my $42 back for taxes from the government?

I once flew only the outbound of a non-refundable RT, so I filed with some Federal office for a refund of taxes paid on the return half. I got a refund of Federal taxes only--not airport-imposed fees.
However, the IRS sent it Certified Mail, which scared me that it was a Notice of Audit  !
