Does anyone know what union represents the US Airways baggage handlers?
What other airlines' employees do they represent?
I would like to know so that I can avoid doing future business with any such airline, as I feel that I can no longer trust workers associated with this union.
Thank you.

You'll find airline travel in this country very difficult if you avoid all airlines with IAM representation. There are over 150 separate contracts held between the IAM and various carriers like United, US Airways, ATA, Southwest, Northwest, and others. Boeing also has IAM employees, so I guess you'd better avoid all Boeing-built airplanes if you're gonna carry it that far.

This is why they have the most clout, and the most to lose if US voids their contract, cuts pay and outsources unskilled jobs. The battle isn't just at US, but for all of the contracts mentioned above. If US succeeds, the other carriers with IAM contracts will follow suit.
The IAM will drag US down to preserve the rest of their contracts.

Is IAM going to drag ALL US carriers, one by one?? There is no way around cost-cutting unless all passengers are willing to open their wallets to higher fares.

This is what I don't get. It's not like the old days where unions are fighting for their fair share of profits from a lucrative business. Sounds like management should cough up a lot more savings from their salaries, but I don't think that is enough to really move the needle. If management were looking for cost-cutting while holding 30% margins, different story. But there is only so much revenue to go around.
