It would be great to show how much Customers and Passengers care about US Airways (even if some employees don't seem to). Would it be possible for the flying public to volunteer New Years Eve to help save a great airline?
I am a 1k on United, but care deeply about the success of US Airways. How can we help save an airline whose employees do not seem to appreciate the great jobs they have?
FFOCUS you should help lead the way!

When I read the news story, I wondered the same thing!

Short of passing out cookies, or maybe apple cider toasts, what did you envision? After 9/11 doesn't every airline/airport employee (especially ones that deal with baggage) have to underdo security and background checks?
Quite honestly the best things passengers can do so as to not have a repeat of last week is not to travel. No passengers, no long lines for checkin, boarding, baggage pickup, etc. If you have to travel (as I do on US next week), then do carryon and try to avoid at all costs checking baggage. Can't lose (or delay) what they aren't handling.

And use web check-in to avoid long lines at the ticket counters and even at the kiosks.

Would that be for a flea dip or euthenasia? :D Seriously I think US is dead they just haven't slumped over yet.

Jeff, you beat me to the punch on this one! No passengers=No need for FA's/Baggage handlers=Who cares if all of them call in sick!

FYI, I believe Sunday is actually going to be the peak travel day this weekend, so if you wanted to do something on just one day, that would be the day to do it.

As morbid as it sounds, as a 1K on United, arguably the best thing that could happen for United is for some other airlines to go under (i.e., ATA, USAirways, Independence Air) because it would probably reduce supply, allowing United to raise fares--at least on some routes.
In my heart of hearts, I am rooting for USAirways (and all legacy carriers). I used to fly USAirways all the time when I was in Indianapolis. They would be missed.

I also flew them quite a bit in the late 90's before they pulled out of the LAX-SFO market and thought they were a wonderful carrier. Unfortunately, they made some horrendous business decisions.

back to the original topic, is there any way for customers to volunteer this weekend? seems like another great PR angle if their own customers realize how the airline is important for the communities they fly to and how they want them to stay around, also a boost for employees to see that energy and desire. how should one go about doing this?

If you have to fly and it must be via PHL, then fly any carrier other than USAir. thats the best way to help prevent a repeat of last weeks mess.

I was at PHL today (yesterday too, but not in baggage claim). I was in the baggage claim between B/C terminals. Things were flowing smoothly. As a matter of fact, baggage was getting to the claim area before pax were there! I saw and talked to a lot of higher-ups in mgmt, a couple of pilots and FAs. I didn't see any baggage handlers. They were also giving out coffee, hot chocolate, donuts, tastykake mini cupcakes (yum), pretzels (both the kind they serve on board and Philly style big soft ones) at the baggage claim area. The pilots and FAs I spoke to were not based in PHL, but other areas, and came to help out. Both ABC 6 and NBC 10 in the PHL areas were there covering how smoothly things were going.

As I was reading this, an image formed in my mind of PHL becoming known as the airport in which bags arrive in baggage claim before their owners!

I think because of the extra staff, it probably made a difference. After this weekend, it'll probably be same old, same old.
