I was just looking around on the US website and saw the career page and saw them hiring very many people. http://usair.com/employment/ Is this any sign of improvement?

Nah--of that whole list of jobs on the web site, only two are Philadelphia positions. One is a part time fleet worker (gopher) and the other is for an assistant to the catering manager.
What does a catering manager do in Philadelphia anyway?

There are many positions that need to be filled regardless of the airline's financial situation just to keep the day to day operations going. Looking at the positions that are available, they, for the most part, appear to be people the airline needs despite the bankruptcy.

My company has at least two recently hired folks who came from CCY. Why anyone would apply there right now is beyond me.

Perhaps they're hiring because emplotyees are leaving? Seems to me if I were a US employee I'd be looking for work at another company, particularly if my job wasn't uniquely tied to the aviation industry. There was a news article a couple of months ago about US executives leaving, altho that may not be who they're hiring. tls

US has had many positions posted throughout both bankrupcies. Why would anyone apply? The same reasons that many of us still book flights with US... faith that the airline will continue to exist, and be well-positioned for future growth. I'm sure many folks would still prefer to work for a legacy carrier than southwest et al even with the recent salary/benefit cutbacks. I'll be graduating with a commerce/tourism degree in a few months and if a suitable position that met my goals and experience become available at US, then I would not hesitate to apply for it.

People have very different risk tolerances. Comparing the risk of taking a job with a company that could very well liquidate vs. buying a ticket is an apples to oranges comparison. What is the worst that happens to a passenger if US liquidates? Lose your miles, be inconvenienced, miss your vacation, maybe lose some business because you miss a meeting. Compared to being unemployed, no health insurance, etc. There had better be a high reward for that job to take that risk IMHO. Somehow I doubt there is a good enough reward since they are cutting everyone's pay/benefits and laying people off. Like I said, I know of at least two people who left US CCY recently to take positions at my company.
If US is attractive to you as an employer in a few months, more power to you and them. Right now they aren't attractive at all to me unless they want to pay me a heck of a lot of money. Maybe in a few months, my perception will change. We'll see.

The John Kerry 2004 Presidential campaign is hiring, too, since they need people to help do post-election things-- I'd say both it and US Airways have equally good long-term prospects.

Here in Philly, there has been USAir help wanted ads each Sunday in the Philadelphia Inquirer for a few months now (I know since have been looking for a new job since August!). The ads always have in HUGE letters: Fly FREE starting on your first day of employment! However, though not technically a "scab" I would feel like a schmuck for taking a job at USAir- espcecially @ PHL - right now since as a baggage handler/gate agent/ticket agent (those are the jobs I keep see in the classifieds) I know I'd be getting paid waaaay less my first day than the senior staffers did when they started. I'm sure there'd be a lot of animosity to me and other new employees...
They're turning away just as many "scabs" as they are having them walk off due to the poor starting wages. :td:
