View Full Version : No Wonder PIT was Turned into a Focus City

I drove into downtown Jacksonville at 1 PM on Friday. The place is crowded with rowdy Steelers fans and the game isn't until Sunday night. ALLTEL Stadium seats about 76,000 and it would not be surprising if 20% are rooting for the visiting team.

Getting to the title of this thread, it is no wonder that PIT is no longer a hub; looks like a lot of western PA has moved to Florida for the weekend. :D

Stay a while, spend your money, hope we can pull the upset and we'll see the Iggles and you (or maybe the Pats) back here for the Super Bowl. ^

We got the Bus, the MiniVan (who may still be hurt) and Big Ben. What more do you need to beat the Jags? :P

Hopefully all the yunzers flew the hometown airline down there and gave US some needed business.

Go Steelers!!!

(or maybe the Pats) back here for the Super Bowl. ^

I already have my premium award, upgraded, for the Superbowl. Game ticket is secured (only if PATS are in it) and car reserved.

Just need the lodging and of course the team. From what I read and talking to AB at RF, the lodging is the hardest part of all.

GO PATS.

Side note: Still running 737s and RJs to JAX during SB. Last year they put some 321s on for Houston. It is highly likely that some east coast teams will be in it.

Works for me... as long as the result is a repeat of the first meeting! :D

Look for larger equipment and special sections, including possible charters from the cities playing in the game. DL has already announced 47 additional flights during that week from ATL and JFK.

Just got back to the beach. I swear that I saw most of the cast of Gung Ho, except for Gedde Watanabe. That had to be Ron Howard's brother in the Pirates batting helmet. ;)

Too bad none of us were going to Charlotte last night.

US flew in a B767-200 from Pittsburgh with the Steelers (arrived into B8). The plane then flew out as a scheduled flight at 6:10pm to Charlotte. The plane is coming back tonight inbound from Philadelphia about 8pm or so, will get towed over to C11, then will depart sometime after midnight with the team.

As far as SuperBowl, US has said they'll add extra capacity on presently scheduled flights during that week.

Delta, as you mentioned, is operating 47-48 extra sections. Continental will also be flying non-stops to Los Angeles and Cleveland. I've heard rumors of Independence Air subbing an A319 on a few flights that weekend. Southwest, the official SuperBowl airline, is still mulling schedule changes.

Went to Ragtime Tavern at 10 PM on Saturday night. Close to 100 Steelers fans in gear going through the barley and hops. Good natured fun with all of the locals. Some folks walking on the beach this AM in their Bettis jerseys.

As usual, the Pittsburgh fans are great guests. But guys, please lose the mullets.

Won't dispute your comment about the mullet. I've never understood that myself. It exists in Western New York in addition to Western PA. Guess it's proof that rednecks do exist in other places than the south. ;)

Here's to a good game tonight! :)

I looked up mullet and this is what I got:

Any of various stout-bodied, edible fishes of the family Mugilidae, found worldwide in tropical and temperate coastal waters and some freshwater streams. Also called gray mullet.

What's that got to do with football?

mileshound,

I'm in the same situation as you except I have a hotel room, but no game tickets. Of course, if the Stillers aren't there, there won't be any reason for me to go.

A mullet is a type of hair style on men. It's short on the sides, usually longer on top so that it stands up and is almost shoulder length in the back. It makes them look like they belong in the movie "Deliverance". Or pitching softballs to a few lesbians. It's the 21st century and men still don't know how to appear.

Nominate your mullet friend to the Queer Eye boys and fast!!

I've heard and used the definition -- business up top -- party in the back.

Not to take this OT, but I think luck will catch up with the Steelers eventually. They can only shield Big Ben from having to win a game for them for so long...

Actually, out at the airport Saturday morning, several arriving Delta flights were fairly full of folks in Steelers garb. Not so many down in US land, though.

Lucky folks arriving into JAX on the 8:20ish arrival this evening from Philly got to ride on a B767.

He's just lucky that Jacksonville played a prevent defense on the last drive when they really should have been playing a tighter cover defense.

Admittedly, he was cool, calm, and collected at the end of the game.

Despite the outcome, it was a good game. Very hard hitting and a clean game. The Jags play calling in the red zone still defies logic. They are still two defensive linemen and a left tackle away from the playoffs.

There are several teams in the NFL whose fans are a real testament to good sportsmanship. Steeler fan was gracious in victory last night. There were about 15,000 Terrible Towels in the stadium and no apparent disturbances in the stands.

My favorite visiting fans are from KC; very knowledgeable and midwesterners are just good people. Fortunately, the Jets have not been here for a while.

JAXpax commented on the fans flying DL. They have a special program geared specifically for people flying to NFL and big college football games. Good marketing idea.

Looks like you guys may be back here in 9 weeks.

We won't even discuss the penalty calls last night. As one poster in the Steeler newsgroup said, there are 6 people who won't be on Steeler fan Christmas card lists this year. ;)

The Jags are getting better as AB noted. The ex-Steelers kept biting us in the butt last night, until Edwards dropped that ball late in the 4th. I am glad to see Fu and Edwards get on a team that will give them both more PT.

We've got the Jets coming to Heinz next week, AB. I'm sure the home folks will make them feel welcome... not. :p

:p

As a former sports referee, I look at officiating with a different viewpoint. The crew last night was never out of position, conferred at appropriate times, picked up some flags when they should have and let the players play without giving either team a clear advantage. Yes, they missed some calls, but give them a break. They'll probably grade out to a B+.

There are some crews that I hate to see, either here or on TV. They are lazy or have poor teamwork. Can't say that about the 7 guys in the stripes here yesterday.

Great game by all. This from a Browns fan. Although I believe that Pit is a better team, the better team on the field did not win.

This is why they keep score......to determine the best team! If you win, you're the best on that day......nuff said! :D
