Couldn't find anything with a search and before calling US and waiting on hold I was hoping someone has done this before. Is it possible to use miles to upgrade another traveller? I have 20k miles and I want to upgrade my brother on a purchased discount coach ticket. Assuming space is available can I call and request the upgrade for him?

I've done it many times. I'm not sure if they have to be family, but I don't think so.

Yes it can be done and they do not have to be family.
I successfully upgraded my brother & sister-in-law a back in September. I also gave them my free US Club pass, which they used during their 3-hour layover in CLT. No, L4PI, they did not make a pitstop at the Krispy Kreme stand. :D
