I am pretty new to being wheelchair bound and will be traveling in December on AWA. My flight is nonstop (5-6 hours) from LAX to BOS. My question is, if I cannot walk or stand, how will I be able to use the restrrom during the flight? I know a wheelchair won't fit in there.

The airlines have aisle chairs that are supposed to be able to get you to the accessible restroom, if the plane has one. In a disability group, however, the consensus was that either a plastic urinal or a catheter is better.

Some of the reasons were:
1. Have to wait for F/A assistance.
2. Plane is full of pax, difficult to use aisle chair
3. Accessible restrooms often aren't
4. F/A can't help you from chair to toilet or bck again.

With a catheter attached to a leg bag, a companion can just take care of the bag. (f/a's can't help with the bag.) Or use a plastic urinal. That's what I do. I try to get a window so it's easy to keep out of sight. Sometimes, though, you get stuck in middle or aisle (especially if you can't move yourself over) but with pratice (prior to flight) you can do it without the person next to you noticing.

The other option is to restrict fluids for a while. That's not a good idea, but I did do it once on an approx. 8 hour flight FRA-IAD.

Wish I had a better answer, but that's the reality of it. However, it can be done and you can do it. I suggest using either internal or external catheter and leg bags.
