Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forum. I have a 2 part question. About 50% of my flights are United and 50% on USAirways.

1) Can I do Easy Checkin on United without a Milage Plus number? I only have a Dividend Miles number.

2a) If the answer to the first question is No: Is there a way to convert my Dividend Miles number to a Milage Plus number to do Easy Checkin? Will it recognize my status during seat selection?

2b) Even if the answer to the first question is Yes: With the potential collapse of USAirways, is there a way to fully convert from Dividend Miles to Milage Plus and maintain status and miles?

Thanks everyone and I hope to hear from you soon.

Hi figz welcome to FT!

You can use the Easy Checkin machines in the airport, but not checkin online.

You can't convert your miles. You could consider asking UA to comp your US status. I don't know how sucessful people have been with that recently -- anybody? I'm considering the same for next year.

You can check-in online on UA without a MP number. Just punch in your e-ticket # and you're set to go. I've done it many times.

I just created a MP number and tried to do it, but my flight is more than 24hrs away and isn't linked to the new MP number, so I got a screen that asked for the last 4 digits of my credit card and my e-ticket number. However, I couldn't get to that page without first logging in with my MP number. Do you have a link I can use to get directly to that page without using an MP number?

From United.com:
In order to use EasyCheck-in Online, you must:

Have an electronic ticket
Be a Mileage Plus Member
Check in between 1 and 24 hours prior to your scheduled departure
Travel on a United, Ted or United Express flight
Travel within the U.S including Alaska, Hawaii, San Juan, Puerto Rico, or St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.
Travel in a group of 9 or less
Use a computer that is connected to a working printer

I know I've done this. Unfortunately, I don't have any upcoming UA flights to try again. I remember it took some playing around and working the web site a bit, so it's definitely not something they intended to work. And, I definitely needed to key-in the e-ticket #. I think I also logged in as a MP member, and I remember thinking that this was an interesting way for UA to link MP #s and DM #s -- since I was logged in as a UA MP member yet the PNR had my US DM number in it.

Assuming that your US DM number is in your UA reservation, here is a work around.

You can open a UA MP account, and use that to login to the UA Easy Checkin site. You will receive a message that you have no qualifying reservations, but it will allow you to search for a reservation. At this point, you will enter the last 4 digits of the credit card and either the record locator or eticket number. Once you input this information, it will find your reservation and allow you to checkin, even with your US number still in it.

In fact, my father (who uses his US number for UA flights) just uses my UA MP login to access Easy Checkin, and then just searches for his reservation using the credit card and rec locator/eticket number.

Does this method work for US coded flights on UA Metal? I'm not so sure..

I often travel on UA metal with US flight numbers. When I travel with my fiancee, her MP number is on her reservation and my US number is on mine. She is able to check-in online, and although we can "see" my name listed next to hers it always says that I'm not able to check-in. Apparently this is because I'm on a US ticket. She, however, is able to check-in since although it is a US ticket, she has her UA number attached.

The moral of this is that if you are on a US ticket with a US DM number, even going to the UA website with the ticket number won't work -- but if you are on a UA ticket with a US DM number, you should be able to do it.

Yes, I've never bought a ticket directly from UA -- always booked on US (037) stock.

It has worked for me many times in the past, even when travelling on a US/037 ticket.

If you are having trouble, you might want to call UA and get the record locator for your reservation from them (it will be different than the US assigned locator). Use this UA record locator, instead of your eticket number, to find your reservation.

I did that yesterday and it found my ticket; however there were 2 problems. First, my DM number was lost from my reservation and I had to go to the ticket counter to get it put back on (defeating the purpose of Easy Checkin). Second, I have no equivalent status on MP so I didn't have access to the good seats online. Once I got to the ticket counter and the agent knew my DM number I had more seat options.
