I have noticed that US Airways has many gates that are being under used at many airports. I am hoping one day to see some expansion.

I got into Tampa yesterday and counted that US has 8 gates here. In FLL I know they have 6 and they might be able to grab a 7th since E8 is not taken by anyone at all. Actually they should hurry up and grab that since they are planning on making that a focus city.

I know MCO they have a ton of gates there and most of them don't get used.

Curious to know places like MSY and other places that US has many gates but they just don't get used to where they should be.

I wish there was a website to look this stuff up. So how many gates does US have in your home town. Let's hope with their transformation plan that we can see some expansion soon.

GSO: 40,41,42,43,44,45,46 US uses em all. Even #'s for express, odd #'s for mainline.
RDU: A20,A21,A22,A23,A24 uses em all
MSY: A4,A5,A6,A7. A4 was used by air midwest until they pulled out, now it's empty but could be use for rj's if us wanted to. US uses 5-7 for mainline ops.
IAD: B45,B47... will park a RON a/c on B43 when needed
SFO: 1,3,5,14,15...use them all at one point or another during the day...some just to park a RON a/c.
LAX: 8,12,4B..all these gates are shared with wn and hp due to the terminal makeup

I knew that at LAX US shared with WN and HP 4B and 8 but I thought 12 they had to themselves?

Also at SFO US shares gate 5 with Mid West Airlines. Actually US does the check in and gate for them.

DCA- Gates 23, 24, 25, and gates 35, 35A 36 thru gates 45

IAD- I remember when they had a hub out of IAD and the entire concourse B was theirs.

I can get the exact gates for TPA tomorrow and will just edit this post.

ATL 3 gates.

FLL E1, E3, E5, E7, E9. E10 and keeping fingers crossed for E8

SEA N10, N11

IAH They have 2 gates and other aircraft parked.

DFW 3 gates

ORD 2 gates

MAD Gate B25

FRA C6, C9 and C 13 (according to the station manager)

BNA (Nashville): B6, B8, B10 - all being used heavily. Capacity is up. For some odd reason - even with PIT cuts - capacity to PIT is up to 4x from 2x - granted downgrade to RJ's. But B10 is often used by two RJ's boarding at the same time.

Last time I was up at BTV, they had 1 and 2, with 2 having a jetway attached. Express was used at both gates, mainline only at 2.

At GSO, they occasionally do use the odds for Express. Last Saturday I saw an ERJ parked at 41...of course, last Saturday, the only mainline flights were in the morning (2 to CLT 1 to PHL)...

Just thought I would point out that in FRA (and pretty much everywhere else in Europe) the airlines do not own or lease the gates as such. Instead the gates are owned by the airport and allocated based on getting the greatest use out of each gate. In some cases this means the same flight will use the same gate every day. At FRA, the same 3 gates get used most of the time, but you can bet that later in the day the same gates will be used by LH, SA and other carriers.

In other cases (LGW for instance) the crew may not know the arrival gate until shortly before landing, and it may be different every day.

This explains why, apart from the TV screens displaying the airline logo, there tends not to be very much airline-specific signage around gates. The excpetion is where a carrier has their hub and is using the gates pretty much all the time (e.g. LH at MUC Terminal 2).

At MCO US gave up quite a few of their gates. I don't have the gate numbers though.

I've been heading into BNA for most of this month, and they don't LOOK that heavily utilized to me - never seen B6 and B8 used at the same time, not even last Thursday when the CLT flight was a mechanical delay. Also thought they had another gate down by the Express/Indy Air gates. Am I missing something?

At Jacksonville, FL, US Airways technically has B5, B6, B7, B8, though their logo is also on B1. B5 and B7 do not have a jetway, and only B7 appears in use (for the DCA-bound CRJ flights, which are soon to not exist). B6/B8 are the two jetway gates and are frequently in use at the same time with a third airplane taxiing in. The last flight of the night deplanes through B1 (which is a completely empty gate area without any chairs, podium, etc.) and the aircraft is towed over to B6 or B8 in the morning as soon as one of those becomes free. I don't know what US will do with just two jetways and soon to be five mainline jets overnighting including a B757.

MCO actually has plenty of empty gates. A wing next to Delta has several empty gates.

BWI: Gates D20, D22, D24-27, D29. In addition, Express also has gates D30-31 and D33-34. With 12 mainline flights, and 28 Express flights, that seems like a lot of gates.

I thought they only had 4 gates left at BWI??? I haven't been though BWI in many years so I truly don't know. If they still do have that many gates, you will see expansion back at BWI in the future.

I don't know. It's been a while since I've been in that part of BWI. I based that on the BWI map on usairways.com (Yes, I know, such a fine source of information there :D ) It's very possible they've gotten rid of some gates.

Edited to add: According to the more recently updated factsheet (http://www.usairways.com/about/corporate/profile/factsheets/was.htm) , there are 3 mainline gates and 4 express. So, not quite as much underuse of infrastructure as I originally thought.

At DTW, they lease A4, A5 and A6. They usually use A4 only -- the mainline jets park there, and they use a separate exit to get to the regional jets / props.

Yes, it does. And many gates only see 2-4 flights per day, if that.

But that doesn't stop MCO from building more and more...
