not sure
i showed up there one sunday morning after spending a week in belarus and i headed straight to the mcdonalds in the back of the food court on the second level

after a week in belarus, that was some fine cuisine :)

i happened to come thru Munich in July and they had a much better selection of food

i heading thru there on friday/saturday, so i will take a close look, if i have the time

The french restaurant at Terminal 3 offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. I always have their duck confit. Very nice!

If I remember correctly, the name is Chez George. You have to go through the security check first. The restaurant is next to lots of luxery tax free shops. :)

The ludicrously expensive fish/oyster bars that seem to exist around the place do have some nice food nonetheless.

Otherwise, it really depends on the terminal you're going to be in. T1 and T2 are the only two that you can pass between airside, and even then, it's generally a rather pointless trudge.

There's not much landside bar various forms of fast food.

I believe the T3 restaurant referred to above is Chez Gerard, which has several branches in London, where it is okay, but just. For LHR, that's probably real praise. In any event, it's certainly better than Garfunkel's.

My advice? There isn't a single decent restaurant in all of LHR. Their offering is a disgrace. That said, even the world's busiest airport (ORD) has a terrible selection of food...

If you must eat at LHR try a sandwich from Pret a Manger. Fresh and yummy. Best eaten in an airport lounge with a glass of bubbly :) (www.pret.com)

There's a Pizza Express landside at T2 - it's not a bad place to eat pizza. OK, the ambience is disasterous, but it is in an airport.

i came thru their on Labor Day
i had a 3 hr laypver so i walked thru all of the terminals that i could get to

nothing stands out
in the main ternminal there is
1) a mcdonalds tucked in the back
which really hits the spot if you have spent 10 days in Moldova, Belarus or the hinterlands of Ukraine

beside that is an overpriced sit down restaurant

in the terminal with quantas air, their is another sit down restuarant ,
but it was closed when i was cam thru

but if you have time and a usa passpport
you can exit the international portion of the terminal
there is a food court on the upper level of where the united -lufthansa check in is (I think)

if you have time, that may be a better option

At best, anything in an airport is going to be passable so let's not get too excited here.

The Chez Gerard in T3 (airside) is the best i've seen, and the food also beats the rear off anything i've seen in an airport lounge at LHR.

Pub chain Weatherspoons also have outlets around the place (I know landside in T1 and both land & airside in T4.) Decent food made to consistent standards and reasonably priced by UK standards.

There's a full listing on the BAA website www.baa.com but essentially airports are a place to fly from, not eat.

One other venue worthy of note is the Crowne Plaza hotel - it has an outpost of London eatery "Simply Nico" located within it and serves a good meal. You need to take the Hoppa to get there, but if you've got maybe 5 hrs transit, not long enough to go into London but too long to sit in the terminal, might be worth a go.

Oh, and jessej you don't explicitly need a US passport to enter the UK - you'll find we're probably a little more welcoming than some other nations that I could mention here....

I agree with scottc, there's little palatable at LHR. Finding something edible for a reasonable price is difficult at best. I tried the sushi in T3 once and regretted it for several hours after. My advice, bring something with you !.

If you can find a Pret a Manger, their sandwiches are usually pretty good. Restaurants - unlikely. Avoid Garfunkels at all costs....

Agree Pret A Manger is good for a snack but there always seems to be a long line on folks getting their caffeine fix. Also, I'd try Chez Gerard again for Steak and Frites and a sit down meal.
