I'm going to be heading back through Singapore in October, and was browsing through asiatravel.com at their weekly specials, and they have the Hotel New Otani listed for SIN$50 a night  . I've wandered past it before a few times previously, and whilst from the outside it doesn't look anything special, given I'll only be staying overnight in each direction I'm not so fussed (especially at that price). So does anyone have any feedback on it from having stayed there before? I know the location could be better, but at that price I'm not going to be *too* fussy. :D

There was a piece in the Straits Times 2 days ago saying it was going to be sold off by the Wuthelam HK group to an unknown acquirer. All staff to be laid off with the option of rehire. No known plans for this hotel at the moment. It is, however, in a nice place beside the river close to Clarke Quay so lots of dining/entertainment options but with the above annoucement, best not to book now.

Just be sure to be off the streets by nightfall. You will be overrun by ladies and men of the night on the sidewalk there. I have not been to that New Otani, been to several in Japan, and ONLY because I had to after the first one. (Do you get the sense that I am not a fan of Japanese Hotels?)

Whoah, what was wrong with your stay then? The New Otani in Tokyo is one of the better hotels in town (sure, a little old, but the garden is amazing) and Kobe's New Otani isn't half bad either. Sure, rooms are tiny by Western standards, but that's true for any Japanese hotel. (Or apartment.)

What? Stayed there in July and do not recognise that description at all!
We had a corner room overlooking Clarke Quay, with a balcony. Room was extremely spacious, housekeeping was immaculate-even down to new kimonos each day! We were there 3 nights so did not eat in the hotel( apart from a lunch which was first class and surprisingly cheap.) Just across from the MRT. Reception very efficient as well. Would love to return next year but I'm a bit concerned now that it is being bought over.

No this is not right. You've gotten the place mixed up with another part of Singapore ;)

I was told today that the hotel building has been sold and will now be part of the shopping centre which is already in the lower floors. Has anyone else heard this?
