I have read here for quite a long time and I am trying to put this all together. What is up with the pen marks?? Are you saying that on all the aircraft, people are sabotaging seats with pen marks. I only ask because I see it as a common thread here!

edited for my lack of typing skills

The point people are making is that US is not good at cleaning their planes.

Come on Alysia, that's not true and you know it. Saying they are "not good at cleaning their planes" implies that they actually clean them in the first place. :o

I had no idea about the pen marks until making US Silver. It's a total disgrace. I have yet to see an F seat without the marks.

The seatback on my last flight had 16 distinct pen strokes.

I've been wondering, has anyone ever seen pen marks on other airline's first class seat backs? I've flown my share of AA and UA first, and I've never noticed any. Thoughts?

I've not noticed them on DL, but I think the seatbacks are a dark blue and less likely to show the marks.

This is why I asked. I work for UA and never in my casual glancing of teh cabin for my flights have I noticed pen marks on seats or trays. I will be honest, I did notice in the upper right hand corner of a lav I was in somone drew a penis out of the design of the wallpaper

Well, Bob and I were going to wait until RF04 to discuss this, but this thread may be a good place for a formal announcement.

One of the committees for which you can volunteer in Philly is the Official US Airways Frequent Flyer Seatback Art Competition. We need judges in the following categories;

1. Classical
2. Modern
3. Impressionist.

Please do not modify or add to any of the contestants. Identify the location of the artwork by the N registration number of the aircraft and the seat to be occupied in order to get the best view of the original work. Digital photos of nominees are appreciated but not mandatory.

This contest will end on September 30, 2004 or when US Airways removes all competitors, residual wine stains and other foreign objects from aircraft cabins; whichever occurs first.

Decision of the judges will be considered final. Bribes must be sufficient in order to be considered. Stay tuned for the beginning of these threads soon after RF04.

LOL . . . .

The best are the ones with the assortment of blue, black, the occasional red, and the rare green marks.

But what I want to know, is WHO IN THE WORLD IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MARKS??! I MEAN WHO JUST DRAWS PEN MARKS ON SEATS?! AND WHY?! DID THEY FORGET PAPER?! I mean I know NONE of us would just pick up pens and start drawing away. What is the motivation behind it?!?!?! Even the newer Airbuses have pen covering the seat backs. I just want to know where it all comes from!!!!!

Ok I'm done now . . .

I certainly hope the pen marks are accidents! (Reaching for something in the seatback pocket while holding a pen). But perhaps they are some sort of art project. Or secret code. (For some very odd reason "the walls of the prophets are written on the subway walls" just coursed through my brain).

I could start a rant about seat pockets. A couple of European carriers make the pockets out of a open webbing of fishnet type of material. Advantages:
Less likelihood that a passenger will leave ticket folder, book, wallet, mobile phone, PDA, or small children in the seat pocket.

Less garbage left. Maybe.

Easier and safer to clean....and to do security inspections.

After a million miles in UA's seats, and mostly in C and F, I can confirm that a few ink marks do exist on UA's F seats, too.

But US had the ABSOLUTLY FILTHIEST cabins that I've ridden in in North America. Even dirtier than ALM's disgusting cabins.

Did I mention US's FILTHY cabins yet?
