Will customer service extend expiring european upgrades.
I think it is probably case by case. If you have a planned trip you probably stand a better chance than just a blanket 'please extend' request but I'd understand if they stuck strictly to the terms on the cert. Let us know what you find out.

I believe that you are sometimes able to use these on Domestic flights if you cannot use them for a Europe trip. Although I'm not sure at all. Anyone else know?

Back when they were "Systemwide upgrades" (DMUPSYS's) you were correct. A couple of years ago they morphed into "Transatlantic upgrades" (DMUTA's) so this is no longer correct.
I believe you can still turn them in for 1000 miles. And yes, there have been reports of modest extensions (a week or two) when a European itinerary is booked just outside the coupon's expiry date.
I was able to have the expiry extended last year by about a week or so, with a trip already booked. Call DMSC and ask for an extension to be put in your record.
