I have read that liquor (and food!) are very expensive in Iceland. I'm going in September for 4 days and was wondering if there's duty free shopping for booze upon arrival in Iceland? If so what do they have? Thanks in advance for any and all comments.

While you have already left on your trip, I thought I would post this for others.

Yes, Iceland is very expensive especially concerning alcohol. There is a large duty free area that you will pass thru before you go down to baggage claim. Most definitely pick up your alcohol here, as it will be much less expensive than buying it in the government alcohol stores in town, and much, much less than in a pub or club. A glass of wine in a casual bar (Dubliner's) was $7 last spring.

One suggestion if you are a liquor drinker is to bring in a bottle or two from home. We brought in some cheapo American vodka to mix with the yummy organic fruit juices we bought there. Everything in Iceland is expensive! And there is a big price difference between the duty-free at the airport and buying in the stores in town. Buy as much as you can transport to the hotel from the duty-free!

Might not be the smartest solution. Customs is very strict in Iceland for obvious reasons. I think you can take in 3 liters of alcohol, but I'm not sure on the details...

Thanks for your response. My trip was almost a year ago (in 2004) and we did indeed purchase some booze after landing. It was a smart thing to do.
