I just found a $716 fare (taxes included) on Travelocity from ORD (Chicago) to Moscow for Feb 2005. The fare seems reasonable to me.
What are average low and high season fares from N America to Moscow if flying a major western airline (UA, NW, LH, AA)?

Aeroflot has flights from IAD, NYC, and someplace on the west coast. Their business class is very inexpensive.
If going in Feb, tale warm clothes, and flashlights.

In general flying to Russia from the east coast is cheaper.
Low season fares can be drop (even from LAX or SFO) below $500 but you need some flexibility. $716 for feb is probably OK if you want to play it safe. I'd wait.
High season is tougher. If you manage to find $700 around summer it's a very good deal.

I am not familiar with ORD fares, but from WAS you can sometimes fly for around 500 (taxes inc) during the winter.
Keep in mind that Feb. tends to be $^%#ing cold in Moscow. I clearly remember the temprature sometimes dropping to -20*C, plus windchill.

if you are brave and hearty, you can fly during the winter for $400 to 500 plus $120 in taxes and about $150 for a visa
if you plan its 50k ff miles
which beats all of the spring, and summer airfares

ITA shows a cheaper fare, available for Feb, 15 and Mar, 2:
US to MOW (via AMS and with an SU connection), LX back, $655,90 with all taxes included
(It seems, a lot of airlines are offering this fare - Swiss, NW/KLM, AA - all in the region of $655-670)

Right now you can fly Delta from ORD to SVO for $670 including taxes. And I agree with the other posters saying the fares will get down to $500 plus tax at some point in time. Not too many tourist are heading to Moscow (or anywhere in Russia for that matter) in February. Your patience will be rewarded in this case.
