I'm on an A320 flight from Charlotte to Tampa this Thursday night and I was quite surprised when my upgrades didn't clear ... so I checked ITN, and even though it doesn't show the upgrade bucket anymore, this is a little surprising:

Considering there's no availability in coach, you'd think they'd be more likely to release some F seats for upgrades ...

I'm in the same boat this Friday from CLT-TPA (as with almost every Thursday or Friday). They hold them for gate release usually. I think the reason is that occasionally there will be an eqpt. swap.

Inventory Management seems to be getting stingy these days, I agree. A week out with F7 P7 A7 showing on a 320 or 321 SFO - CLT yesterday afternoon, I wasn't cleared. UGed not at the gate, but upon boarding. I understand the need to hold several seats for last-minute full-fare pax, but this kind of severe hold-back is getting extreme......

I think once there is an oversold situation in coach and the upgrade inventory is zero they put a "hold" on the upgrades and move it all to airport control even if there are 7+ seats open in the FC cabin.

How does that work?

The Gate Agent remembered me when I asked nicely at Pre-Board Call what the UG situation was like. No UG for me, sorry. As I approached the ramp, he hurried over and said there's a seat available.

What's strange is that I thought they closed every flight 15 min to half hour before, and should know in advance whether there's an empty seat up front or not.......

They do close the flights early. My best guess was someone either with a confirmed F seat or was ahead of you on the upgrade list probably misconnected or was full-fare and was a no-show.
