It all depends where you are staying, though a vast majority of flights are from the Cancun airport (which is actually located about 10 min from the begining of the Riviera (where the Cancun hotel zone finishes).
I would suggest flying into the Cancun airport as there are more flights and flexibility in schedules, unless you are staying on Cozumel Island.
Where and for long are you going?
BTW, most connections will probably be much easier to arrive in Cancun.

Cozumel Island? Doh! I didn't know it was an island... :o
One of my cousin is planning her wedding at one of the resorts in Riviera Maya so I guess I'll looking into getting award tickets to Cancun.
Thanks, sargento!

The last time I was in the area it was.. unless maybe the waters magically split in two and allows you walk to mainland for 60 minutes each day.. (wouldn't that be nice??)... @:-)
Though do note there is a very frequent ferry that takes you to mainland (and drops your right in front of Senor Frogs where you can dance on tables all night long)... :p
The Maya Riviera is loooooonnnngggg... so be sure to have the exact hotel name and at which KM (sorry no Miles in Mexico) it's at off the Highway. The hotel could be a 30 minute cab ride or a 2 hour drive (actually not at the speed they drive at!)..
If you need more details let me know as I know the are fairly well.
Enjoy the wedding.

Thanks, sargento
My Canadian cousin is getting married at Bahia Principe Akumal resort but I'm thinking about using awards for either Hilton, Sheraton or Westin resorts in Cancun.
Which one of the above resort is closest to the Bahia Principe Akumal resort? Or would it be just better to stay at the same resort?
Thanks,
P.S. My Canadian cousin lives in Toronto too.

The Bahia is about 2 hours from the hotel district (250Km, but the vans that transport people move very quickly in the four-lane highway). From what I've read it's an all-inclusive hotel with 2 pools (though beware as it appears one of them is under repairs as we speak) with great service and food selection. I'm sure your cousins will have a fantastic wedding there!!
In terms of lodging, if you want to see the entire wedding party before, during & after the ceremonies, then stay at the resort. Otherwise you can stay in either of the properties you mentioned..
I know the Westin personally as I've been there many times and the service, pools (9!!) and rooms are all great, just be sure to request an ocean-view one. The Westin is located at the end of the hotel strip (i.e. quiet area) making it a short (10- 15 min) bus ride into the many outdoor and indoor shopping & restaurant venues. What I particularly like about the Westin is that it's spread out so it's not very noisy and if you want, grab your flippers and gogles and snorkel 50 metres down (i.e the last hotel) @ the Club Med waters and you don't even have to pay for a snorkelling trip!!
A cab ride from the hotel will be expensive (~US$50 -60), but there are many vans that leave just past the hotel zone down the Maya Riviera so you can always take one of these.
The only thing about being in the Riviera is that if you want to go out of your hotel you'd have to visit Playa del Carmen, which in my opinion, has become too touristy for me. Depending on your time, you may want to escape to Isla Mujeres for a day trip.. It's a small island with no franchises that lives of tourism as it's a small pleasant island. It's fun to rent a scooter or a golf cart for the day and drive around the island. If you go, there's a variety of restaurants (in town and out of town) that are very reasonably priced and well worth it. Just be patient getting back onto mainland as the peak hours of 5- 7 p.m. there's a line-up that will take about 30- 45 minutes (plus the 30 min boat ride).
I feel you may have more sightseeing opportunities staying in the hotel zone, but just be prepared to pay about the same as back home.
with over 3.5 million people in Toronto, you never know I could know your cousins, but probably not as I don't know of anyone getting married this year. :)
Don't forget to bring your sunglasses.
hope this helps a bit.

I would NOT stay in the Cancun Hotel Zone. You'll be faced with a two-hour "commute", and who wants to do that at 2:00am? Now, if your talking about a vacation before or after the wedding, that may be a different story. But for any day that you'll be in Akumal, stay there (or nearby).

:) I was told that I could call toll free directory assistance in the US from México. I tried it and it worked. They have English operators and they gave me a number to a bank that I couldn't get before. It works just like the US except that you dial 01-800-555-1212. They referred me to dial 001-877-208-7697 to make free calls to banks and government agencies in the USA and Canada. And I have used 001-888-222-1516 to make personal collect, credit card or third party calls at a rate a lot less than any other phone company. If calling from the USA/Canada, simply drop the double "00" and dial normally as you would a toll free number from the states. They also have a website at: www.Visa.Assets.Com with a bunch of other information for tourists and Americans/Canadians traveling/living in Mexico, or the USA/Canada. I though it would be helpful. :)
