Depends what you're looking for of course, but in Perth one of the things you should do is experience a sunset over the ocean, and having dinner at the Trigg Island Cafe while watching the sunset is ideal. Good seafood and delicous steaks, casual and at a reasonable price.
A general word of advice - there are many places in Freo and Perth that people might recommend that have a good reputation for all the wrong reasons. i.e. location or "trend factor" (e.g. The Blue Duck Inn at Cottesloe - wonderful location, and not a bad place for a drink, but the food is lousy). Make sure people recommend a place for the food before you eat there.

In Canberra, head either into the city center (Civic) - and eat at Republic (Across from the Crowne Plaza/Casino), or the Chairman and Mr Yip (near the Canberra Centre) - or alternatively there are a number of cafes in a pedestrian mall known as Garema Place.
Or head to Manuka or Kingston.
For cheap food head to the Canberra Workers Club (Across the street from the Australian National University - University Ave) - beware the poker machines.
