I'm going to be in Buenos Aires and Montevideo for several days each soon, and am looking for suggestions regarding the best places to eat in each city. Generally, the price of food will not stand between me and a good meal, but I'm not so beholden to tableclothes and snooty waiters that I'd pass up better food at a neighborhood joint in a back alley, either.

Hopefully someone will make at least one suggestion about where to get really good beef.

Cabana Las Lilas in Bs As is supposed to be the best steak house (in the world?)

On my first night, I asked the remis driver and other locals for rest. suggestions, they say I should go to an asador "La Estancia" which is located in la calle La Valle, very close to la calle Florida (in the city). It's a small walking distance from the Obelisco.

This restaurant is huge and seat capacity is for 200 people. Anyway, the place has a nice atmosphere and before entering you'll notice all different kinds of meat and chicken in the asador.

The menu has a good selection of asado (lomo, rib) and their portions are generally are for two people or more, so you'll be eating a lot if you're alone. Try the combo that has beef, chicken, rib chorizo and morcilla which costs 14-18 pesos. With this selection you can try everything coming out of the asador. The rest. has an extensive wine list. I ordered a Carbenet (Chile) which was like $10 pesos for 1/2 bottle. I should have ordered the 2 full bottle, because I ended up drinking 3 small bottles. http://www.flyertalk.com/dining/ftdining_forum/smile.gif

Before the meals arrives you'll get an beef empanada, which to me was so small. Despite being a big restaurant, the waiters are always roaming their sections, so you won't de disappointed. For me, the entire combo was delicious, I too suggest trying this restaurant. The portions are good and as I mentioned before, very plentiful.

If you want to have something after your meal, do so because the rest. has the most increible flan (custard) I've ever tried. And I love flan !!

Another steakhouse I enjoyed was Estilo Campo, located in Puerto Madero - a walking distance from the Hilton. This restaurant was recommended by another FT member. This place is nice and when we arrived there at 10 pm, the place was full. The rest. does have a great menu list of beef/rib/chicken. Anyway, we each had a three course meal, consisting of a lot of beef, shrimp, rib and 4 bottle of wines. The total cost came out $50, tip included. You'll need to be there to enjoy it..

When I return in Nov. I'm going to eat at Cabana Las Lilas, let's hope it's the best steakhouse in the world.. A few FT members have recommended this restaurant.
