In honor of the Olympics, and a recent disappointing dining experience, here's my take on a few Salt Lake City restaurants:

1) Metropolitan - This restaurant feels and tastes a lot like a New York restaurant (my frame of reference), without the noise. This leaves the room feeling a bit cool, but the service has always been spot on and the food is excellent. This is a very expensive restaurant by Salt Lake standards, but wins my vote for the most sophisticated restaurant in the city.

2) Martine - I've just discovered this place, but I like it a lot. The restaurant is on the bottom floor of a brownstone that seems somewhat out of place in Salt Lake, but is a lovely environment for a restaurant. Although not exactly cheap, I think it offers a good value for a high quality of food. Service has always been smooth and the servers are very nice. The "tapas" are the more interesting part of the Mediterranean menu, but the entrees (in particular the specials) have always been high quality in my experience. I highly recommend Martine.

3) Bambara - This restaurant, in the hip Hotel Monaco, also has a sophisticated, urban look, much like Metropolitan. Unfortunately, the food here is wildly uneven and often rather disappointing. Our mushrooom strudel appetizer was excellent, and the two steak dishes were competent, but the butternut squash ravioli was cloyingly sweet and the pork loin lacked the flavor that one would hope for.

I'd add more, but that's a start and I'll wait to see if anyone actually cares.

My wife and I live in Salt Lake City. The place we go to for a special dinner, such as for our anniversary, is the Roof Restaurant in the Joseph Smith Building (formerly known as the Hotel Utah). It is a gourmet buffet. (Yes, I know that "gourmet" and "buffet" are contradictory terms, but the Roof Restaurant makes it work.) Reservations are essential, and save lots of room for deseret. If possible, as to be seated by a window. The restuaruant is on the tenth floor and overlooks Temple Square, so the view at sunset is stunning.
