I used to like this restaurant a great deal, as it was calmer, and so much quieter then Roy's. Does it still exist? Has anyone any experience recently?

I was there recently. It does still exist and is doing quite well. (I was there for a business meeting, in a meeting room rather than in the regular restaurant area.) They seem to be doing a booming business.

Paul,
3660 on the Rise is doing better than ever. It's 3 blocks from my house so I go there often. It has expanded by adding a big L shaped room for banquets, meetings, etc. They hold special events like Rock and Roll night, Wine Tastings and holiday dinners in the new room.

Best appetizer on the menu is the Ahi Katsu. It's a must have if you like seared ahi. My favorite entree is the New York Steak Alea. It has this great seasoning on it and comes with thin Maui onion rings on top. Of course, you have to leave room for dessert which is a specialty of the house. I can never decide between the chocolate souffle cake, bread pudding of the day or the Mile High Waialae pie.

The menu changes every few months, but my favs are regulars on the menu. Wednesdays are margarita night and one night is martini night. Restaurant is only open for dinners and closed on Mondays. If you like to figure out how to cook stuff and drink wine, they have cooking classes with wine pairings on some Monday nights when the restaurant is closed.

Say hi to Gail at the front when you go.

How do you sign up for Cooking Classes? I am going on the 9th of August and will have one Monday on Oahu. Alfred--

Explat,

They don't have cooking classes every Monday. I don't have my current newsletter on hand and their website (www.3660.com) seems to be down for me. You can always call them at (808) 737-1177.

In Honolulu recently, I decided to give this place a try, and took away the following impressions:

First, the location is a bit odd, at least from this tourist's perspective. As I approached, I was pretty much convinced that I had taken a wrong turn somewhere. Fortunately, it's easy to tell which building you're after when you get close--it really stands out from the neighborhood.

The Ahi Katsu recommended above is very good, but overall I found myself expecting better fish (and hoping for better *local* fish) than seemed to be available. The food was generally quite good, but nothing stood out as being exceptional. The environment was quite nice, with a low-key yet elegant decor, but the service seemed a bit obtrusive at time (at one point, some of our dishes started getting cleared away before we were done and we had to stop the guy from taking them off the table).

Overall, I enjoyed the meal, but not unequivocally. Admittedly, I ate there on a Sunday night, which is often the worst time to be at any restaurant, so it's possible that on on other nights everything runs a bit more smoothly.
