Trying to decide on an out of town restaurant to write about for Sweet Willie's generous contest (http://www.flyertalk.com/dining/ftdining_forum/Forum4/HTML/000084.html), I asked myself the question, Of all the places I visit, what trip isn't complete unless I go to a certain restaurant? And as much as I love the Carnegie Deli and Jackson Hole burgers up in NYC, for me, the can't-miss out of town restaurant is Mother's in New Orleans.

I know it's been mentioned several times on FlyerTalk, but I don't think there's ever been a full review, and if so, it's not in FT Dining unless my search skills are diminished. So here goes.

Mother's is a New Orleans institution, a hole in the wall kind of joint on Poydras St in Downtown. They serve up New Orleans style home cooking, really well done.

Some local specialties that Mothers does well include Red Beans and Rice, Etoufee, Jambalaya and the like. Most of these are served in more than one size, so you can order to match your appetite. Also of note are the Po Boys, including the "debris", which is scraps of roast beef soaked in pan drippings, and the "Ferdi", a combo of ham, roast beef, and debris.

It's well known, and popular with both locals and tourists. Expect a line, especially during special events (mardi gras, jazzfest). Order at the counter, and usually by the time you've paid, a seat will have opened up.

Its proximity to the convention center makes it perfect for a pre-trade show breakfast, filling enough that you won't need to subject yourself to Convention Center cafeteria lunch. And for me, breakfast is when usually I go there.

My favorite breakfast sandwich anywhere in the world is Mother's ham and egg biscuit. (Caution: not suggested for cholesterol watchers) You'll get an oval plate about 8" wide, covered with fresh cut slices of ham and lots of scrambled egg. The sign outside Mother's claims the "world's best baked ham", and while I've certainly not eaten every ham in the world, this one is up there with the best. The term sandwich is a stretch, since you'll need to eat at least half of what's on the plate before getting to the point where you can pick it up. All for four dollars.

Swag,

I must agree with you! I've only been to New Orleans once and that was back in Sept. 1996. We stayed for about 4 days and EVERY DAY we ate at Mother's. Without a doubt, we will definetly visit there when ever we go back to New Orleans.

Just PLAIN GOOD!!!!
