I spent a couple of days in Lincoln last week and found this very nice Indian restaurant in the Haymarket. Looking at the menu, The Oven specializes in Northern Indian cuisine with some dishes from Kashmir and Pakistan too.
This Haymarket area consists of old red-brick warehouses refurbished into restaurants, bars, and shops. They have done a pretty nice job there generally (thanks God, they didn't level these historic buildings as is the American way too often). So the Oven is in a very nice neighborhood and offers a quite stylish and comfortable dining room. Indian masks and other artifacts decorate the walls. Ceilings are high.
The menu is vast and attractively priced. It is mainly classified by meat -- e.g. you find all the lamb dishes in one column and at the same price: only $12.95 incl. soup or salad!! Vegetarian choices are also plenty. The wine list is impressive -- I noticed that they had received some award from the Wine Spectator for it -- and so is the beer list. The offer even a couple of craft beers in addition to Belgian Chimays and American microbrews among others.
I started with some kind of citruse lentil soup and freshly baked roti bread. Both were delicious. My companion's salad looked better than the average appetizer salad with a nice variety of veggies. For main course I selected mixed Tandoor grill: shrimp, chicken tikka, and beef kebab. All were very good, but once I tasted my companion's lamb dish I realized that I had made a mistake... it was just wonderful, tender and just perfectly spicy. The lamb dish was served nicely in a separate bowl -- a good thing if you like sharing dishes (I do). The portions are big (took care of the lunch the next day too). Service was very nice and warm, but also nicely discreet.
