Living in Chicago, yet having a place up in the Wisconsin Northwoods, I make the drive up 39/51 many times per year.

While I don't mind the occasional fast food meal, I would rather find a local place (just off the highway) that serves good food fast.

I've found two such places.

Timbers

The exit for Timbers is about 5-7 miles north of Madison, WI.

Off of 39, take exit #126 (V) Dane/DeForest.
Head East about two miles past the Subway. Timbers will be on the North side (left) of the road.

Timbers has some good brats that they themselves parboil in beer/onions so all you have to do is ask for one and they will put one on the grill that is built into the wall behind the bar. Good brats fast for less than $2.75. Timbers also has burgers and the usual bar food. People have always been very friendly and the service has been great.
Timbers is open 7 days per week late.
Timbers is a bar atmosphere, not a restaurant if that matters.

The second place is located in Stevens Point, WI.

The Hilltop serves a good steak sandwich, grilled chicken ceaser pita wrap sandwich. Most of the food is good, served quick.
Lots of seating in a restaurant atmosphere.

Oh, on Saturdays they serve a good Prime Rib.
