Never can get the name right but its an ethnic club for Germanic folk located at 33rd and Victoria in Vancouver. The restaurant (in the basement) is open to non-members on most nights (closed Monday) w/o a charge unless one goes on and stays there until late (9-ish) on a dance night (usually Friday or Saturday).

The ambience is a bit tacky but an acceptable attempt to instill the sense of a beer cellar in the old country. The patrons were mostly older middle-aged and up German-speaking folk - the younger ones evidently don't go - though there were a few Asians including myself this particular evening.

The menu is fairly limited but the best choice is the daily special of which there are usually 3-4. There was a spiessbraten, a breaded pork cutlet (not sure what the difference is between this and a schnitzel), trout filet and one other. The specials come with a soup Ggood). Prices were between C$11.85 and 12.95.

My GF (Austrian descent) and I both ordered the trout special. The special came with a fish soup which was like chowder and smelt like fish. It was simple but good. A slice of rye bread accompanied.

The trout was a generous filet that was fried in butter and some other oil (it's own?) and topped with sliced almonds. A boiled potato (needed salt), rice, blanched (canned?) peas and one other vegetable accompanied.

Had apple strudel and vanilla icecream for dessert. The icecream was of premium quality and the strudel was good. $7 for 2 I think.

Fare was a bit bland and simple but then that's ordinary Germanic food.

Just a word, avoid the house wine which is some Californian stuff. The white tasted like the varietal (sauvignon blanc) but wasn't very good.

I had a pint of Warsteiner on tap which didn't seem as good as the stuff I drank from a 5l keg over X'mas.

It's o.k. and a chance to experience one of the ethnic clubs which will probably disappear in a few years.

Moved to just within 5 minutes walk of this place. Went there to eat twice during the move. One night's special was a schweinhaxen (roasted pork shank) for 2 for $19.95. Came with red cabbage (rotkohl). As good as what I hate in Frankfurt's Sachsenhausen district apfelwienstubes.
