I'm going to be in Toronto for the first time in a couple of weeks, and am hoping that someone here can help me with suggestions for where to eat. I'll leave this open ended. Especially given the weakness of the Canadian dollar, money is less of an issue than the quality of the food.

Even with the conversion, dining in Toronto can be quite expensive.
This being your first time in Toronto, my suggestion is go up the CN Tower, and have dinner in the revolving restaurant high above the city http://www.flyertalk.com/dining/ftdining_forum/smile.gif

Mercer and Boba are fusion cooking restaurants
Mercer ST. Grill, 36 Mercer St, 416.599.3399
Boba, 90 Avenue Rd, 416.961.2622
Centro (Italian influenced) 2472 Yonge St, 416.483.2211
N 44, 2537 Yonge St, 416.487.4897 very upscale international.
Toronto has a very diverse ethnic population. Don't miss out on VERY good Chinese or Middle Eastern cooking.
Have to disagree w/rankourabu re: dinner at the CN tower, go for drinks and the view, but skip the meals here. The CN tower suffers from what afflicts many restaurants w/great views, which is the food is mediocre. Diners are going for the views not the food.
Mercer Street Grill was very good but has closed since the owner lost a bidding war when the lease was up for renewal.
If you want more a more *funky* place to eat, try Citron on Queen St W. Good food, groovy decor, and you can go next door to the Gypsy Co-op for cocktails afterward.
I agree - DO NOT eat at the CN tower - the food is quite mediocre and overpriced. The view, however, is great on a clear afternoon.

My favorites are Suser on King near Bathurst (a great chef- Suser Lee), Splendido on Harbord, and Scaramouche on Balmoral (great view - beats the CN Tower).

For a snack or a quick lunch I can recommend the food-mart across the street from the Westin harbor castle if you're at the waterfront. They have a really good selection of hot food for takeaway; take it with you for a ferry ride to the islands...
