A CHILLI-CRAB war looks set to break out between the popular East Coast seafood restaurants and a new chain of restaurants that has just opened at the old Turf Club in Bukit Timah.

Costing $4 million to set up and with seats for more than 2,000 diners, the chain of four restaurants - Ah Yat Seafood, Owen Seafood, Treasure Inn Seafood and Old Racecourse Seafood - opened last Sunday at the latest mega-mall, Turf City.

Based on a recommendation from the locally available book Makansutra (also a web site, www.makansutra.com), (http://www.makansutra.com),) we went to:
No Signboard Seafood
414 Geylang Rd
off Lor 24, next to Lai Ming hotel

and had very good chilli crab, great white pepper prawns, and very good sambal kangkong. About S$6 taxi from Orchard Rd. Tables are outdoors. (I didn't see if there were indoor tables.) No (evident) tourists. I believe it's open until 2AM for those of you hungry after landing at SIN at midnight. Recommended.

WOW! This seafood recommendation is great. I fly with SQ all the time and I should stop in Sin for a day to try this out.

Cheers guys.

Another place based on a Makantime recommendation is a traditional coffeeshop (open, corner location, no air con):
Sin Huat Seafood
659/661 Geyland Road
off Lor 35
5PM-1AM

Google searches pretty much agree, and I'm here to confirm, that it helps if you like garlic. Scallops and black bean sauce. Lobster bee hoon (rice vermicelli) (more than you can eat). Not cheap.

Waitress gets irritated if you aren't eating enough or are wasting time SMSing your pals or reading, (which I often do while eating solo). Part of the character, I guess.

Chef takes the actual order and is a good guide. Recommeded.

'No signboard' is great IMHO for pepper carb, however their chilli crab is not among the best.

I would give 'Hwa Yue Wee' a try, along Upper Changi Road. Close to the Bayshore. They used to be on the beach before the reclamation.
