This restaurant is located near the end of the walk along the Singapore River. It is open for lunch (until three on weekdays and Saturday and 330 on Sunday) and for dinner 6 to 11 PM.
Traveling alone I often have trouble finding meals at reasonable prices. What initially drew me to this restaurant was the fact that they have a daily special. These daily specials included flamed drunken prawns ($14) Singapore crab ($10), Peking duck ($19). Prices in parentheses are Singapore dollars which means that I could get an entire Singapore crab for about U.S. 5 dollars. Not only that but it is excellent. If you go with a number of people they limit to one offer per table, but for single diner this is a smashing bargain!
The restaurant is upstairs with large windows overlooking the river, but they are unfortunately high enough that it is difficult to get a good view. Of course the time I ate there when it started pouring rain I had a great view of the sheets of rain hitting the window http://www.flyertalk.com/dining/ftdining_forum/smile.gif
The tables are basic and the restaurant is a very large room with a typical Chinese setup. Many of the tables around with lazy susans in the middle. There is also a stage in the corner, which I believe is used for marriages and other festivities. Service is what you expected to middle level restaurant, neither exceptionally good nor bad.
Now to the important stuff -- the food. I have been their three or four times over the last few years and the Singapore crab is excellent! It is sweet and spicy and messy and the most amazing bargain. I try to order Peking duck once, but the waiter kept telling me was too much for one person and my love of Singapore crab won out. The food I saw the other tables looked and smelled great. The only other thing I've had to eat there myself has been dim sum -- did I forget to mention that they also offer these at half-price? Boy was I stuffed. Their wine, while ordinary is quite reasonably priced and it is easy to get something by the glass.
My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Downside, not directly on the river (but this is a plus during the middle of the day when it's extremely hot), not close to an MRT station. Upside is excellent value for money, a homestyle low-pressure (although it can be noisy) environment with very friendly waitstaff. And while I do know if they're still doing this each time I came they gave me a free dessert.
