For those with kids or those interested in the Planet Hollywood saga, the San Francisco location at 2 Stockton Street, near Market, quietly closed its doors this week.
The restaurant, which opened with its trademark celebrity splash in 1995, closed without so much a whimper on September 5th. A spokesman for the restaurant chain said the restaurant closed as a result of general lack of business and the economy.
I suspect it was really the unimaginative food.
For the record, I was not necessarily a fan of the venerable theme restaurant, but wanted to make those aware who interested in visiting the restaurant, that it has closed.

Too often this kind of mediocrity is rewarded and these types of restaurants seem to go on forever, while decent restaurants with good food die every week. I have no problem with theme restaurants per se but Planet Hollywood was awful, I would rate PH-SF a 1 and Hard Rock-SF about a 4 on a scale of 1-10.
These restaurants often seem to survive purely on the fact that visitors believe they will see celebrities at these spots, at least in SF, I think chances are much better of seeing a celeb in a great restaurant than in one of these.

Solid food like a Houstons would have kept this concept around forever. This was a mis guided attempt at trying to put out cafeteria- food.Once the novelty wears off in any restaraunt only superior food ,product and service will keep it for the long haul. One can never eat the decor no matter how much fun or trendy it is.Or what celebrity had a drink there.
I agree with your rating of these companies if anything you were generous with your #s

A lot of people go to the Hard Rock Cafe to collect pilser glasses, hurricane glasses, shot glasses, pins, or clothing with the HRC logo and city name on them.
In November 2002, I looked up the address in the S.F. phone book, but when my wife and I got there, the place on Van Ness was abandoned. We later found out that it has moved to Pier 39--where all the tourists hang out--on the right side at the base of the pier, facing bayward. Very convenient to reach by the old-fashioned streetcars.
Frankly, the HRC in SFO is small and crowded (or was on Sat. 2 Nov 02). The one on Saipan is much more spacious and comfortable.

The one at the Pier has a larger capacity. It might not seem as spacious as the ceiling height isn't nearly as great as it was on the Van Ness location.
