With its innovative fusion menu, hot Latin beat and unmatched Philippe Starck cutting-edge design, Asia de Cuba recently opened at the freshly redesigned Clift Hotel in San Francisco.

Taking its cue from Asia de Cuba at Ian Schrager’s Morgans hotel in New York and Mondrian in Los Angeles, Asia de Cuba at the Clift brings its critically acclaimed nouveau Asian-Latino cuisine to The City.

Meals include such favorite dishes as oxtail spring rolls, tunapica, hacked lime and garlic chicken, Chinese five-spiced sirloin and Hunan whole wok crispy fish stuffed with crab escabeche – all of which are featured on both the lunch and dinner menus and served in generous portions intended for sharing.

Reservations can be made by calling 415/929- 2300.

I haven't gotten around to trying it yet, word I keep hearing is that it is very expensive (and not really worth it). I will probably end up going, just because I like the Ian Schrager properties and want to check out what the buzz is about.

There was an interesting (and not too flattering) review is the SF Weekly this week: http://www.sfweekly.com/issues/2001-09-19/eat.html

And speaking of new Latin-Fusion restaurants, has anyone tried Alma in the Mission yet? It just opened last week or so by Johnny Alamilla who previously ran Che on 3rd St. I really liked Che so I'm looking forward to checking this one out.

Alma had a nice review in the SF Chronicle Food Section this week also. Though I have yet to try the new restaurant, the review was very positive.

I've been to the Asia de Cuba in NYC. It *is* too pricey, but easily ranks as one of the top ten meals I had in 1999.

We had dinner there last week and it was outstanding! The idea is shared dishes or family style, so although the menu prices do seem high, if you are dining in a group of 4 or more, it is definitely worth the money. We had 7 in our group and our waiter recommended 2-3 appetizers and 4-5 entrees. Plus this is an excellent way to try many different tastes. This was more than enough food, we actually could've done without the last entree.

Yeah, it's open. Was there 2 years ago though. The reviews are def. hit or miss, but I have a very good meal. I love being able to try a little bit of everything. Service was quite good.

The Clift Hotel is also a scene to check out. Redwood room is interesting.
