Aqua, 252 California St. We always eat at the bar, just can't get around to making reservations in advanced. Awesome seafood, pricy.

We usually stay in the Union Square area and Dottie's True Blue Cafe (522 Jones St) is THE place for breakfast IMO. While the traditional american breakfasts are served, many can be served w/a twist such as an exotic pancake batter. Very Yummy. I believe that the bread, muffins and scones are all homemade. Get there early as it fills up quick.

Chez Nous, 1911 Fillmore St. Quail w/wild mushrooms very good. Great traditional dishes.

A fun, funky decorated place where good "American" food is served is the Cypress Club, 500 Jackson St. Almost like you are sitting in Jeanie's bottle. My smoked pork chop w/pecan pancakes was great.

Tadich Grill, 240 California. While a namesake? It just has not lived up to our expectations for the two visits we've had there.

Our consistently favorite restaurant in San Francisco is:

Flytrap, 606 Folsom St. This restaurant serves hearty gourmet dishes, such as Roasted Chicken w/figs in a port reduction w/mashed potatoes, YUM!! It is also the only place where I have ordered and very much enjoyed the calf brains.

So, I'll throw a couple more on this thread in the hope that it will actually gain some momentum.

I recently ate at Charles Nob Hill (1250 Jones St.) and was impressed. Intimate, quiet, very professional. We enjoyed one of the tasting menus (I'm a big fan of tasting menus), and every dish was good, and a few were spectacular. Ron Siegel, the chef, works magic with lobster, so do your best to try a lobster dish. Service was attentive, friendly, helpful, and not nearly as cheezy as I'm making it sound.

In February, I ate at Masa's and was impressed. Apparently, they remodeled just before I showed up, and the new interior was pretty funky, but not overwhelming (like Le Cirque 2000) and was still fairly peaceful. Willie Brown was eating a couple of tables over. The food was excellent. By comparison, the weaker dishes here were better than the ones at Charles Nob Hill, but the better ones were not as good as the best at Charles. Service was not quite as good, either.
