Here is a good spot to pick up chinese egg tarts and a coffee/tea.
Lok Heung Yuen
15C Wellington Street
Central District, Hong Kong
(this is in the beginning of the mid-levels and can be accessed from the open escaltor that goes up this district from the main business district)
I found this in the tourist book when I was in HK with my wife and I wanted to make sure she did all the 'proper' tourist highlights. I spent many a summer there but I got my eats in Wan Chai at local spots.
This place is good for the classic cantonese egg tart. Egg tarts are a little small open face tart (3' diameter and 1' deep) which have a sweet egg custardy filling. When fresh out of the oven they smell like a cross between fresh brioche and creme caramel. You can also get a very good 'Yin-Yang' which is a half cream tea and half coffee drink or just a good solid 'milk tea'. If i recall correctly it is about HK$10-15 for a tart and drink. A nice little break if you are in the area.
It is fairly busy during lunch and midafternoon (tea break) on weekdays since there are lots of offices about that send somebody to pickup some tarts for them.
Navigation tips - If you are in the MTR station there should be a local map where you may be able to locate Wellington St. If you are in the district it is a street or two above the business/shopping strip.
If you are in the area you can swing up to Hollywood Road where there are a lot of good antique shops (or at least they look good from the outside).
Good Eating!!!
